La Chiva Beach (Playa La Chiva) is a serene and sandy haven at the southern end of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. The Caribbean Sea here is ideal for snorkeling and the beach is utterly secluded, with few crowds and amenities. Enjoy the silence and forget your troubles in this relaxing, idyllic spot.
Admire the varying hues of blue that make up the warm seawater. Spy Chiva Island in the distance and snap photos of the picturesque vista. Bring snorkeling gear and glide over the water to see the array of multicolored fish swimming around the maze of coral beneath the surface. The water is particularly flat here, providing excellent snorkeling and swimming conditions for kids.
Get to the beach for the sunrise to have the whole strand to yourself. Run along the shore, with only the sound of your footsteps and the placid waves as a backdrop. Although more sun seekers arrive as the day continues, the beach rarely becomes crowded and has few, if any, vendors.
Bring your own snacks and drinks and a blanket for a picnic on the sand. Sip sweet water from one of the coconuts that drop from swaying palm trees. Clamber over the rocks at the ends of the beach and walk out into the shallow water.
The beach is also known as Blue Beach. It is free to enter and open to the public at all times. Bring water for the day and insect repellent to stave off mosquitos.
Find La Chiva Beach on the southern coast of the center of the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico. It is part of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, just a 20-minute drive south from Isabel II.
