The Plaza de Gipuzkoa (Gipuzkoa Square), also known as Plaza de las Cadenas (Chains’ Square) is a famous square in Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish), a small town in Gipuzkoa Province, Basque Country, in northern Spain. Discover a scenic and busy plaza in the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) area and take great photos of the colorful houses around it.
The picturesque Old Quarter of Hondarribia is considered a historic site because of the many interesting buildings scattered around it. In earlier times it was enclosed by fortified walls that protected the town from foreign invasions. Now it is surrounded by iconic traditional buildings with no more than three or four stories.
The Plaza de Gipuzkoa was constructed using a very traditional architectural style, giving the square a medieval charm. Walk to the plaza and discover the meeting point of two lively streets of the Old Quarter: Satarka Kalea and Harategi Kalea.
The square is very popular among locals and tourists. Plan your trip to be able to see one of the many musical concerts that take place in this lively square throughout the year.
While you are visiting the Plaza de Gipuzkoa, walk around the area and pass through the striking arch known as Jacobean Gate. It connects the Gipuzkoa Square with the street Santiago Konpostela Kalea. Wander along the many other quaint streets of the Casco Histórico. Notice its traditional cobblestone pavement and gorgeous buildings with iron balconies.
Find another very popular square, the Plaza de Armas (Arms Square), which has been the scene of many of the town’s most relevant celebrations for centuries. Admire the gorgeous Castillo de Carlos V, a castle near the plaza, and take some great photos of its elegant façade. If you continue walking you will reach the famous Barrio de la Marina or Barrio de la Portua, the pleasant fisherman’s quarter.
