Narrow cobbled streets, a castle with more than 1,000 years of history and centuries-old buildings adorned with geranium-filled flower boxes make Hondarribia Historic Center a must-visit destination. Wander the ancient streets of this medieval walled town to discover treasures from the past at every turn.
Walk through the grass-covered moat alongside the 16th- and 17th-century thick and high walls that surround the old quarter. Then enter through the medieval Santa María Gate, the main entrance. This leads to Calle Mayor, the main street which is home to the 18th-century baroque town hall and the 17th-century Casadevante Palace.
Nearby is the Church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano, a beautiful building with baroque, gothic and renaissance features. See the town's original coat of arms on one of the façades.
Walk to the end of the main street to reach the Plaza de Armas, which has been the town’s main square for hundreds of years. Highlights include the Arma Plaza Interpretation Center, which features exhibitions covering the town’s history, and the Castle of Charles V. This 10th-century defensive structure is now a hotel. Even if you're not a guest, visit the ancient building for a drink at the bar.
Continue your tour through old, narrow and atmospheric streets to discover more ancient buildings. Head down San Nikolas Street for the 16th-century Casa Mugarretenea and Juan Laborda Street to find the Casa Eguiluz, which also dates from around this time. Conclude your visit in a café on Plaza Gipuzkoa then leave the old quarter through the 16th-century Gate of St. Nicholas.
From here walk a few minutes down to the Marina neighborhood. It lies close to the beach and port and boasts many bars and restaurants.
Hondarribia Historic Center is easily walkable. If you’re traveling here by car, parking is available for a fee in the garage just outside the ancient walls.
