Unsafe Practices & PCI DSS Violation We were shocked during check-in on October 10. The receptionist demanded to photocopy our credit card (with all details visible) as a security deposit. When we refused this unlawful request, the manager backed her up. We offered a $200 cash deposit instead. They accepted but refused to give an official receipt, only providing a legally worthless handwritten note after we insisted. Exhausted after a long trip with my wife and two kids, I reluctantly risked the cash. Ultimately, the stay was nice and the cash was refunded, but the process was unacceptable. Upon returning home, my bank confirmed that the hotel's demands were completely illegal. A full copy of a card with the CVV is a tool for identity theft. This is a direct violation of PCI DSS standards (which strictly prohibit photocopying physical cards or storing unencrypted CVV data) and PIPEDA (Canadian privacy law). Leaving a physical copy of a credit card accessible to any shift clerk is illegal. I highly advise management to retrain their staff before they face massive merchant fines.
