Historic 1850s Home at the Base of Jump Mountain

Nestled at the foot of Rockbridge County's landmark Jump Mountain only 14 miles from historic Lexington, this charming, comfy 1857 family farmhouse is ideal for those seeking both tranquillity and a base from which to explore the numerous tourism attractions of the region. It also provides insight into the heritage of the Scots-Irish Walker family who first settled here in 1735 – their current sixth generation descendants proudly display a deed signed by Thomas Jefferson when governor of Virginia.

As Walkerlands offers four spacious bedrooms – one on the ground floor with an en suite shower and nearby bathroom, the other three plus a full bathroom on the floor above – as well as a sitting room, family room, dining room and fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen it is ideal for families or groups of friends. And then there are the outdoor amenities of this 550-acre farm combining woodland and pastureland: two porches with comfortable seating and hammocks, a brick patio complete with a umbrella-shaded picnic table and chairs, splendid views of the Appalachian mountains and green pastures filled with grazing cattle plus a quiet country road, dead-ending in a beautiful woodland at one end and leading at the other end to Walker-s Creek overlooked by the picturesque log cabin Walkerlands' owner author and travel writer Mary Moore Mason restored several years ago.

HOUSE RULES
1. Check-in is 3pm-8pm; If you unexpectedly find that you will arrive outside the check-in window, we can most likely accommodate you if you contact us to make the necessary arrangements ahead of time. Check-out time is 3pm.

2. Although the house sleeps up to 14 persons, each guest over 10 persons is $25 per person per night. It is the guest's responsibility to notify us of the number of persons sleeping in the house if that number changes. Please note: The ‘Guest service fee’ that is charged to guests is the fee that Airbnb collects for the use of its platform. This is NOT a Walkerlands fee.

3. This house does NOT permit parties or large gatherings. Only registered guests (meaning guests sleeping at the property and who are a part of the number count; not to exceed 14 persons) are allowed on the property during the duration of the guests' stay.

4. DO NOT put grease or vegetable oils in the sinks or toilets. Put all grease and vegetable oils in a jar and leave it on the counter to be disposed of by housekeeping.

5. The house is very well stocked. However, we value the planet and seek to live in conscious relationship with her by practicing sustainability in any way that we can. Therefore, we intentionally limit our use of one-time consumables. While the house comes with cloth options for napkins, dish towels, and table cloths, we only provide a starter pack of consumables- one roll of paper towels, eight rolls of toilet paper, two 8 gallon trash bags per day of stay, and one box of tissues. If you think you will use more than that over the course of your stay, we recommend that you bring extra.

6. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, diapers, wipes or paper towels down the toilets. Because we have a septic tank, only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilets. Small white trash cans are provided for disposal of anything that is not toilet paper.

9. DO NOT put beverages directly on wood surfaces! Use drink coasters provided throughout the house.

10. DO NOT leave wet towels on wood furniture or wood floors.

11. CHILDREN MUST HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION AT ALL TIMES. No exceptions. Due to the proximity of the house to the road, cattle, and stairs, it is MANDATORY that parents watch children at ALL times to ensure their safety.

12. The entire house and property are available for access EXCEPT for two locked rooms on the first floor and one room on the second floor.

13. ALL ACCIDENTS including but not limited to personal hygiene, injuries, slips, falls, spills and or any damage or breakage MUST be brought to our attention before check out.

14. Rinse dishes thoroughly before putting them in the dishwasher.

15. Our space is located in the countryside. Though we treat the exterior to keep out pests including insects and mice, this is a reality of nature. Our space may not be a fit for those who are extremely phobic of these and other wildlife.

16. Any issues with the property must be brought to the owner's attention within the first 24 hours of your stay.

A true step back in time
It was amazing to have the privilege of being able to stay in a home that is this timeless. However with an 1850's home, there are some aspects that may not be what you're used to, especially the bathroom facilities. They were OK, but a renovation in that area would be welcome. The beds are all comfortable! Great internet, too. I loved just seeing all the antiques ... and the beautiful views. We weren't often at the house because we were in town for our daughters graduation. It's a unique experience to stay in this home!

Charm, views, and cows!
We were there for a family reunion/Birthday celebration. The grounds are very cool. Beautiful views and a cow pasture right behind the house. There were so many cool finds in the house from antiques, to Old National Geographic’s and old books, to a ton of DVDs to watch on a rainy night. I agree with some other reviews that the place needs an update (paint, doors that close - and open - my husband got stuck in the powder room, updated bathrooms, better AC and Wi-Fi…). But it’s an old house and full of charm and I think that out weighed the rest. Wendy is very quick to respond and that helped a lot with planning our trip.

Nothing to Jump At
This was a terrible experience. We arrive to stay for two night. Only stayed one. Did not sleep in any of the bed rooms we as two of the rooms were in feasted with bugs. The women refused to stay. We had to make arrangements for them to stay with friend. We slept I. The TV room, the Tv did not by the way. It was an awful experience. Because we could not stay Saturday Night… being that everything in Lexington was booked up we had to cut our visit short

Hoping for better
Wendy was great host communicating instructions to get into house and with a pamphlet describing the history behind her family’s ownership of Jump Mountain. This house while large has seen better days. Lights didn’t work and the house was dirty. The kitchen was small and very dated-even had a full size wash machine wedged between the sink and the oven. What made us very uneasy was the presence of several locked rooms with adjacent locked stairways that weren’t really described to the renter and seemed strange. The bathrooms were not really adjacent to the bedrooms and were extremely inadequate. I love the countryside around Lexington and have stayed at several local homes and Wendy seemed very nice but we opted to stay in a Lexington hotel for the weekend. The outside of the house and location had great vistas as advertised. . I would suggest this house needs some work and updating before being put back on VRBO. Lexington, while close as the crow flies is, at best, a 40 minute drive to city center. We were really disappointed.

We had an incredible time while staying at Jump Mountain. The views and setting cannot be beat. Having no noise or light pollution was the exact break we needed. We felt completely refreshed after our stay. The house is adorable and has all the comforts you need. We spent most of our time outside on the porch and in the yard.

Perfect place for a mini vacation with our grandsons!
We took our grandsons (ages 2, 3 and 14) and your beautiful, charming house was enjoyed by all!! When we arrived there were mini muffins and oranges that the boys immediately enjoyed, and fresh brown eggs we had for breakfast the next morning. The little ones loved the play room, and the oldest was thrilled with the DVD collection! We loved sitting on the porch in the morning and literally having cows stop and look over as they were passing by. It was truly the most relaxing few days!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your home !

Great Stay at a Historic Home
Visited with 5 of my teenage children (ages 12-17), and wasn't sure how they'd receive it. I was mostly concerned with them getting 'bored' without their regular sports activities and constant electronic entertainment, but the three younger boys were captivated by the comic collection and "old" record player. They loved the trampoline. My daughters enjoyed hiking with me and taking pictures (plenty of great views, 'natural architecture', river scenes, etc. Great location for visits to Lexington, Natural Bridge and even Blacksburg. We hope to return this summer to visit the swimming holes and drive-in (they were open but it rained the night we planned on going). Wendy is a great host who was welcoming and flexible. Looking forward to a return trip soon.

Beautiful Setting in a Lovely Old Home
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on this property. Quiet serenity in an antiques-filled home. We loved our evening walks and campfires in the fire ring. Easy drive to a number of activities that we would also recommend (Morning Star Stable, Lexington Carriage Co., VA Safari Park, Greenbrier bunker tour). Wendy was a wonderful hostess, communicating with us before and during our stay, very available for questions, and even left local eggs and a few other goodies for us in the fridge. We would not hesitate to stay here again!

I feel like I am in a Jane Austen novel!
Not only did my daughter feel like she was in a Jane Austin novel; surrounded by high ceilings, tall windows, and gorgeous antique furnishing, but she also READ a Jane Austin novel pulled from one of the many bookshelves. Books lovers will find untold treasures here! I loved the beautiful wood floors and huge rooms. The window units kept the house very cool and comfortable. The master bedroom was lovely, with a very comfortable bed! There were plenty of extra sheets and towels all over the house. The dining room was beautiful and perfect for our family of 11. We simply had to set up the kitchen table right next to the dining room table. The living room was wonderful for reading or playing games. The den was cozy and great for watching TV or movies. My six-year-old girl was in awe of all the toys and dress up clothes in the children’s room. They all loved the trampoline and the hammocks. The kitchen was very small. I would suggest bringing extra paper products and any kitchen utensils that you can’t live without. We found apples and eggs waiting for us in the fridge. I had spoken with Wendy prior to our trip, and she arranged for six dozen local farm eggs to be delivered. Wendy was wonderful! She was happy to give me volumes of information. Communication was a little difficult during our stay because cell service was spotty, even with the WIFI. We all loved the back porch and patio, with a picturesque view overlooking cow pastures and mountain ridges. We cooked outside on the firepit as often as we could. Once the sun went down, the night sky was a wonder, with more twinkling stars than I could ever see in my neighborhood at home. The Virginia countryside was stunning! Lexington was a charming town about 30 minutes away (the closest place for food and gas we could find). My oldest daughter loved the Bookery and The Downtown Bookstore. I just adored the Farmers Market on Wednesday morning from 8-12:30am. My husband and I enjoyed a perfect date night at the Southern Inn. Our older children enjoyed Panther Falls (1 hour away) followed by Todd’s Barbecue in Buena Vista, and swimming and the swinging bridge at Goshen Pass (12 minutes away). Natural Bridge Sate Park (40 minutes away) was breathtaking, and the majesty can’t be conveyed with a photograph. We enjoyed our stay!
