Soma is situated approximately 160 miles (257 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, the national capital.
See for yourself why Fukushima is so frequented by travelers from all four corners of the globe, by hitting the road and exploring the many natural and man-made attractions around Soma. Places in the vicinity of Soma are Namie, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the north, and Shiroishi, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the southeast.
Organize some transportation and head out to Sendai, a retail and transport hub for the region, located some 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Soma. This regional center has plenty of tourist attractions, such as Sendai City War Reconstruction Memorial Hall, Miyagi Museum of Art and Miyagi Baseball Stadium. Aoba Castle (Sendai Castle), Rinno-ji and Sendai City Museum are other places definitely worth visiting for those who have time to spare.
Learning some of the language is an excellent way to break down cultural walls, so be sure to memorize a few handy Japanese phrases before your trip. "Isshoni odorimasenka?" means "Would you like to dance with me?" "Benjo wa doko desu ka?" ("Where's the toilet?") is also useful.
When it's finally time to pack up your backpack and say "Sayōnara", you'll have heaps of memories to take with you.
