The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes, including the most active in the world, Kīlauea. Covering 333,000 acres (1,335 square kilometers) of Hawaii’s Big Island this national park is unlike any other in America. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Hawaii for its scenic drives, stunning views and fascinating natural history and science museum.

The Rainbow Falls, set amid lush vegetation and incredible scenery, are jewels of the Hilo landscape. They are named for the miniature rainbows that appear at the foot of the falls in certain weather conditions. Come here to get close to nature and take photographs of the scenic cascade.

There are many waterfalls in Hawaii, although to see them you often have to take a long drive and a difficult hike. The Akaka Falls State Park, however, is a great option for those wanting to see two of Hawaii’s most impressive waterfalls without requiring too much time or exertion. Visit the 100-foot (30.5-meter) Kahuna Falls on your way to the impressive 442-foot (135-meter) Akaka Falls, arguably the most famous in the state.

A trip to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a magical experience for flora enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Pick any corner of this 40-acre (161,874-square-meter) conservation area to explore and be amazed by the countless varieties of plant and tree life that surround you. Look for a wide range of mammal, bird, reptile and insect species as you wander the twisting trails that guide you around this environmental treasure trove.

The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools and excellent surfing. A house at the beach dates back to the 1920s and was once home to the Richardson family, for whom the ocean park is named. Today visitors to the ocean park can visit the house, now the Richardson Ocean Center, to learn about the marine life of the area.
