It occupied a strategic location between the Moravian and Hungarian empires, and after conversion into a fortress, was important in defending against the Ottoman Empire. It later became a summer residence for the Habsburg family. It's undergoing a slow process of restoration, and was opened to the public in 2007. There are several rooms belonging to the municipal museum.
