Brae Hotel

Brae Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"Not the fanciest hotel BUT great location and the room was large, clean, comfortable and priced right! Couldn’t ask for more. Parking easy. Dinner was great. Breakfast was wonderful - what a way to start the day exploring Shetland. Ate one night at Frankie’s fish seafood - it was great. Make sure to make reservation if you want to eat at restaurant otherwise it will be take a way. Staff at hotel were great. I would stay here again."

NEW Luxury Group Sea View Stay; Spacious, Garden

10/10 Excellent
"Booking the property was very easy and the VRBO posting accurately reflected our experience there. This property is beautiful and peaceful...even the drive to the location is very scenic. The location is amazing, on the water the views are great. The property was immaculate, had everything we needed for our family of 10 adults. The property is very nicely decorated. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. The host promptly responded to any questions. What was amazing that I have not seen from other VRBO rentals was the comprehensive online guest guide that not only told you all the things to see in the area but also how to work the kitchen appliances...everything you need to know about the property was documented in the online guest guide. If you are planning a visit to the Shetlands, I would highly recommending staying here. We were very fortunate during our stay as we did not experience any rain until our last day...it was windy but no rain."

"We were on a 3-week tour of Highlands & Islands. Owners Andrea and Paul were stupendous hosts! So kind and helpful! Food, especially dinner, was first class! We learned much about the history and where to visit. Irving, the waiter, was charming. We strongly recommend."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Ulsta?
The best area to stay in Ulsta is the central village area itself, particularly for its convenience and access to essential services.Ulsta is a small, linear village on the island of Yell, primarily stretching along the A968 road as it approaches the ferry terminal. It's characterized by scattered homes, a local shop, and the ferry link to Toft on the Shetland Mainland. This area is the hub for travelers arriving or departing from Yell, offering the most straightforward access to transportation and basic amenities. For solo travelers or couples making a short stopover, staying near the ferry terminal in Ulsta is ideal. It provides quick access to the inter-island ferry, allowing for easy onward travel to the Shetland Mainland or explorations further north on Yell.
When is the best time to go to Ulsta?
The best time to visit Ulsta is during the summer months, from June to August, for the most favorable weather and longest daylight hours.During this period, you'll experience milder temperatures, typically ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), and significantly less rainfall compared to other seasons. The extended daylight, with almost 24 hours of light around the summer solstice, provides ample opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Shetland Islands. This is ideal for those planning outdoor activities such as hiking, birdwatching, or boat trips to nearby islands.Travelers looking for a tranquil experience will find Ulsta particularly appealing in late spring (May) or early autumn (September). While the weather might be a little cooler, these shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds and often lower accommodation rates, making it a good option for those seeking value without compromising on the peacefulness of the Shetland landscape.
