Visit Nagahama Beach, a wide sandy shoreline providing views of Sagami Bay and the mountains of Japan’s eastern coastline. The beach stretches for 1,300 feet (400 meters), with a shallow protected bay offering an ideal place for kids to swim safely without any interference from strong waves. Created in 2004, this artificial beach is popular with families.
Bring your own sun umbrella and towels and set up a spot on the beach to work on your tan. Rent beach chairs and plastic floats for extended time here. The beach does not have any shade, but umbrellas are available for rent if you don’t have your own. May, July and October are quite warm and not too wet, while the rainy season dominates in June, August and September.
Take the kids to enjoy the playground equipment behind the center of the beach. Come to the area in October for the annual Atami Historica G.P. car show, with classic cars, a slalom race competition, good food and an evening party. An August festival features fireworks over the beach. Stop at the Minamiatami Taga Tourism Association behind the beach for more information.
Restaurants and food stalls in the area serve seafood, ramen and additional culinary specialties. Note that smoking is not allowed on the beach, but an adjacent smoking area is available. Use the showers and public restrooms at the north end of the beach. Note that the beach area is also referred to as Nagahama Seaside Park.
Nagahama Beach is in the southern part of Atami, touching the coastline of Sagami Bay. Ride a train south to the Izu-Taga station and walk east for 10 minutes to reach the coast. You can also drive south from the heart of Atami for 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) to arrive here in about 10 minutes. Admission is free, but parking has a fee. A limited number of electric car charging stations are available.
While in the area, consider visiting surrounding sights such as Nakano Beach and the Nishijimano Orchards, where you can pick your own autumn fruit.
