Once you've visited all of the well-known attractions in San Marcos, there's a lot more to discover in the surrounding area. Collect the keys to a rental car, pack your bags in the trunk and take to the open road. We've come up with some road trips we know you'll enjoy:

• Puerto Vallarta is 120 miles from San Marcos. Renowned attractions like Malecon deserve to be at the top of your list here.
• Your next pit stop? It has to be Aguascalientes, which is around 100 miles away. Victoria Stadium is one local hot spot you really shouldn't miss.
• Head to Bay of Banderas to rediscover nature. Take a picnic to enjoy or just recharge your batteries in the fresh air. From San Marcos, it's 140 miles away.

If you don't have a driver's license issued in Mexico, then you may need to acquire an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be able to rent a car. It's also important to note that if you do need an IDP, it has no validity on its own. You'll need to show your driver's license from your home country your passport and other forms of ID as well. Lastly, make sure the credit card you used to book the rental vehicle matches the name on your driver's license and passport. Some other things to note to rent a car internationally are:

• Age restrictions: You need to be at least 25 in most places to rent a car. If you're younger than that, it might still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to the types of vehicles available to rent.
