While exploring the northern Pacific Coast of Mexico, be sure to visit the Christ of the Sacred Heart, an enormous statue of Jesus, with arms spread in a welcoming embrace. At 75 feet (23 meters) tall, the model can be seen for quite a distance. Arrive at the entrance to nearby Las Rocas Resort for some of the best views of the large hilltop figure.
Notice how the statue stands on a gray cupola at the top of the hill. Barefoot and bearded, Christ appears to be wearing a white costume and a red robe. Spot the exposed Sacred Heart symbol on the model’s chest, representing love, pain and compassion.
Drive or walk to the top of the hill and stand next to the statue. Snap photos of your family beside the figure for a sense of its immense size. Take refuge from the sun in the charming cupola, which provides spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
Learn about the history of this work of art, which was constructed from steel and fiberglass by artist Gregorio Ramirez in 2006. It is said that benefactor Don Antonio Pequeño refused to disclose the cost of the project, which he funded in its entirety. Chat with locals about the cultural importance of the statue, which formerly had a cross where worshippers left flowers. The cupola beneath the sculpture’s feet is free to access and open to the public at all times.
Christ of the Sacred Heart stands on a green hill, a little inland from the Pacific Coast. It is between the cities of Tijuana and Ensenada in the northwestern corner of Mexico. Drive south from Rosarito for 10 miles (16 kilometers) to reach the landmark in about 20 minutes. Continue traveling through the area to see nearby attractions including The Castle, Pikin Parque de Altura and the Jardín Social Las Dalias.
