About this property

Entire place

MERMAID RETREAT

The farm is located on the beautiful Hamakua coast with views of the ocean and Mauna Kea mountain. We do not need air conditioning as we get the cool mountain air at night. You will receive a tour of the 12+ acres and taste the exotic fruits when they are in season..
I clean very thoroughly between guest stays (even before COVID happened).
There's a village farmers market/food share down the hill from us on Tuesday afternoons from 3-6pm. You will find local residents selling fruits, veggies, flowers, art-work, crafts, baked goods, and hot food (Thai, Caribbean).
The entire downstairs of our home is for guest use (over 1,600 square feet). It boasts a large bedroom with a King-sized Casper bed with a 1/2 bath. A few feet away is the shower and a second toilet. The kitchen has a full range stove with oven, full-size refrigerator, French press for coffee, and basic cooking/baking supplies, .
Fast Wi-Fi available. Bedroom and tv/kitchen-dining room open to outdoor pool area.
Laundry facilities available during the hours of 10 am-3 pm.
NO PETS, PARTIES or SMOKERS PLEASE.

We would stay here again without hesitation
My fiance and I spent three nights at the Mermaid Sanctuary. We found the accomodations very much to our liking, super spacious and very unique when comparing this property to a hotel or condo. Definitely more personality than the average night's stay away from home. Our hostess was very good about communicating with us if something out of the ordinary happened (the automatic gate went out of order for a brief bit). We are both fussy but we would recommend the property and intend to stay again. Thanks!

Corinne warmly welcomed us into her place and showed us around when we got there after dark. She had many recommendations for local restaurants and sight-seeing, which we were very appreciative of. She has a beautiful property that lies in a “rainforest like” antmosphere and every morning we woke up to the sounds of a variety of birds and it was so peaceful. She gave us a tour of her property, telling us about the varieties of fruit that grow behind her place and sharing some of that fruit with us as well. Corinne is very knowledgeable on the culture and history of Hawaii, as well as the unique geological features the island has to offer. Staying with Corinne felt like staying with family and she was always up for conversations about anything. She went over and beyond in making us feel welcome and took it upon herself to show us some of the hidden gems the area has to offer. We will always remember our rejuvenating experience staying at Corinne’s on our big island holiday.

What a pleasure! If our plans had been different, we’d have stayed here the entire time! It’s just what the doctor ordered, and then some - idyllic surroundings and plenty of room, not only in our unit but also on the property. Corinne has thought of pretty much everything, including nice details like plush towels, and she’s a very pleasant person. This North Hilo location is an easy drive to popular places, and a relatively comfortable distance to Waimea or Waikoloa. We would definitely stay here again, and can heartily recommend it to easygoing travelers who are looking for novel accommodations.

Amazing introduction to the authentic Hawaii
Corinne and Norman were fantastic hosts. The place was large and well appointed. We got in late and appreciated the thoughtfulness of some coffee and cream in the fridge for the next morning . The real bonus here is Corinne and Norman. They were a font of information, providing wonderful insights about the vegetation on the island as we walked around her farm site, hearing from Norman about special hidden gems that only the locals know about, and getting the low down on what it really takes to live on the island. We will stay here again and certainly recommend to friends.

A remarkable place
A very spacious accommodation on a farm with acres of fruit trees. Warm, hospitable hosts. Scenic countryside at a bit of elevation from the coast, so there are cool breezes in the evening. There is a full kitchen with all the conveniences you could want AND an outdoor pool. Highly recommended.

Gird your mind, body & soul off the grid.
I joined Vrbo back in the day looking for this experience on Maui on the Hana side - it turns out it is on the Big Island on the Hilo side - a veritable fruit farm that could vend the garden of Eden if needed. The vibe was rain forest meets drought stricken mainlander. We swam in the pool every day and took the tour and ate the exotic fruits. We enjoyed the screened in kitchen/patio for breakfast every morning and did a load of laundry before we left. An unforgettable stay of the better part of a week.

Amazing!
We absolutely loved our stay with Corinne and Norm! The place was spacious, comfortable, and beautiful! We loved our tour of their farm and tried fruits we'd never had before! Corinne is a genuine and incredible soul full of kindness and knowledge! We sincerely appreciated all of her time and teaching. Norm was also so funny and we could easily see he had a heart of gold! They were truly such amazing souls and we are grateful to have met them and of course stay at their place as well. They were indeed the best part of our stay! They certainly offer privacy if their guests would be the type to keep to themselves, however, we were eager to meet them and loved and appreciated their time and attention. We were so happy to make friends! When visiting, be sure to check out the local farmer's market down the street on Tuesdays! The sense of community is beautiful! Be sure to remain present in the moment and take in all the beauty, wealth of knowlege, and serenity this place and these people have to offer. It's truly amazing and life changing =)

Perfect start to a Big Island getaway
We have visited the big island many times, but never stayed on the Hamakua side before. This was the perfect place from which to explore the area. We had the entire ground floor to ourselves, including a large bedroom suite with sliding glass door access to the pool just steps outside. There was also a full kitchen stocked with everything we needed, plus a dining room, living room, laundry room...the place is huge! Corinne and Norm were the most gracious and interesting hosts--they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and give us a personalized experience. I mentioned that we were vegans, and Corinne made us some amazing vegan chili one night! The atmosphere was so peaceful and chill, just what we needed to unwind and get into the aloha vibe. We learned a lot and got to sample many delicious fruits, nuts, honey, and much more. We can hardly wait for another visit! -Aloha and mahalo! Kim and Steve

What can we say? Not only did we find paradise, but we also found adorable children to play with, and a wonderful family with whom we plan to stay in touch. Norman and Corinne are wonderful, generous hosts. Honey from their bees, fresh fruit on their farm, home-made sticky rice mochi at the neighborhood Farmer's Market. I am going through withdrawal at this very minute. Norman and Corinne, so lovely to have met you. What a wonderful, BEAUTIFUL place, and a wonderful, BEAUTIFUL family. Mahalo!!! Lisa and Dan

Our outmost respect to our hosts Corin and Norman, Thank you for sharing your piece of Heaven and giving us a wealth of information on the local fruits and trees. We will be back!

Absolute Paradise!
My husband, our toddler, and I stayed for a week. We were taking a much needed break from cold and dry Alaska. The location was perfect. We really preferred the east side of the island and we felt central to things like the botanical gardens, volcano, Hilo, Waimea beaches, etc. the community around the house was lovely and we often went for walks along the street or around their farm; we also really enjoyed the farmers market outside their gate. The pool was cold but refreshing. The kitchen had everything we needed. The space is much larger than it looks online- it’s actually kind of 4 different rooms, which was great with the baby. Everything felt clean and comfortable. Corinne really thought of everything. And Corinne and Norman were lovely, gracious hosts. They were especially patient and kind to our daughter. I hope we make it back again soon.

My husband and I have always dream of staying on tropical fruit farm and this where our dream came true. We loved every minute at this nice, clean, and beautiful property with Corinne and Norman. They were so kind and hospitable. They allowed us freely to walk their property and enjoy any of their fresh fruit from the trees. They even gave us farm eggs, honey, soursop, squash, and all you can drink coconuts from their tree. This is the best amazing experience you will never fine at a hotel or resort. The feeling of home away from home. We loved everything about it and yes, even the sound of he rooster every morning..😂 . Our 1.5-year-old son loved the place, fruits, goats, chickens, and cats; he didn’t even want to leave. Wish we could have stayed longer. We will make sure to stay here again on our next visit to Big Island. Thank you again Corinne and Norman!
