  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

Although this motel is a bit dated. It is in a great location, clean and had everything we needed. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Would stay there again

Excellent communication from the property manager when we were running late. Very friendly and accommodating. Very little noise from the nearby main road. Good value for money and happily stay again.

We stayed for three nights while attending a family event. Check‑in was quick and easy, and the owner was very polite and helpful, which we really appreciated. Our unit was a good size for two adults and two children, but the layout didn’t suit our family. The two single beds were in the lounge, so once the kids went to sleep, we couldn’t watch TV or move around without risking waking them. Even turning on a light or using the bathroom disturbed them. It would have worked better for the children to have the separate bedroom. The room had a small dining table with only two chairs, one sofa, and a small TV that we needed to move closer. The kitchen and bathroom were dated but usable. There appeared to be some water damage around the bathroom sill and under the sink, and the taps dripped as they didn’t fully turn off. The shower was older but had great pressure, though the hot and cold were reversed. It was quite warm during our stay, and the air‑conditioning unit was located in the bedroom, leaving the rest of the unit very hot, especially at night. The biggest downside wasn’t the motel itself but the surrounding area. There were loud domestic arguments nearby on multiple nights, which woke us and made things feel unsettled. This is obviously outside the owners’ control, but worth noting for families or light sleepers. Overall, we managed fine and appreciated the friendly service.

Upon arrival reception door locked. Slightly unnerving at 2pm to have this door locked. Upon check in they could not locate my reservation booked through wotif. Eventually found it after 10mins through an expedia booking. Dont know how that works. Staff were friendly and walked us to room. Rooms are dated. No security lock on door and a normal push button lock on inside which was a bit loose. Large stickers of tractor and animals on doors, flooring in bathroom worn out and door wouldnt close without using the seperate turning lock. The down lights above bed had been ‘painted in’ reported to office and informed some women like to paint them with nail polish for mood lighting. Slight odd. Location was great, staff were really polite and helpful but obviously a bit of work to do on the property itself.

rooms are spacious however the customer service wasn’t all there, worker that lives upstairs was very creepy towards us ( aged 18 & 20 yr old girls) which made the stay very uncomfortable.

If you are looking for a bed for the night then this would be ok. Kitchen bench top looks like covered in Duracell, with it even peeling off, shower wasn’t clean and leaked all over the floor. Was advertised with a pool and sky tv which they don’t have. Towels were not cleaned in morning as they said and needed a phonecall to get sorted.
