Northeast of Munich’s Old Town, this residential neighborhood offers many opportunities to visit museums, cafés and shops and a spacious urban park.

Walk around the neighborhoods of Schwabing to enjoy Munich’s history beyond the fortifications of the Old Town area. Start at the Siegestor triumphal arch, which is dedicated to the Bavarian Army and serves as a gateway to the district. Gaze up to the top where a chariot is drawn by four lions. After significant damage during World War II, the monument was rededicated as a memorial for peace.

Stroll from the arch to the huge English Garden. Jog, practice yoga, sunbathe or picnic on its roughly 930 acres (375 hectares). Watch surfers at Eisbach Surfing, shop at a Christmas market or attend the Japanese and Chinese festivals. Paddle around the Kleinhesseloher See and relax with refreshments at the park’s beer garden before climbing to the Monopteros temple for stunning views of Munich.

Back on the city streets, travel through time at varied museums. Study ancient sculptures at the Glyptothek, Old Masters at the Alte Pinakothek and modern and contemporary art at Pinakothek der Moderne. Nearby, the Museum Brandhorst, filled with works by Andy Warhol and other contemporary artists, also offers tours and hands-on workshops for all ages. The Bavarian National Museum features European-focused art from the Middle Ages to art nouveau, with an exquisite collection of Nativity scenes. Explore natural history at the

Palaeontological Museum Munich.

Leopoldstrasse starts as Ludwigstrasse at Odeonplatz in Old Town and runs to the Siegestor, then continues northeast toward Schwabing-Freimann. Meander along this wide boulevard to view centuries-old mansions, shop at small boutiques and stop for people-watching at quaint cafés. Return in the evening for dinner and lively entertainment.

Travel west to the historic Löwenbräukeller on Stiglmaierplatz. View the decorated tower and iconic sleeping lion from the outside and step inside for Lowenbrau beer and Bavarian sausage.

Drive to Schwabing in less than 30 minutes from Munich’s airport. You’ll find hotels and boutique accommodations dotted all around the neighborhood, very convenient for walking tours to all the attractions.
