This sprawling southern district is packed with markets and malls as well as emotionally moving tributes to Cambodia’s complicated past.

Modern and exciting, Chamkar Mon is Cambodia’s most forward-looking area, bristling with markets, embassies and businesses. This expat-friendly Phnom Penh neighborhood is one of the best places to stay for longer-term visits to Cambodia. It’s worth a visit even on a quick trip. Rent a car for the day or hop on the back of a passing tuk tuk or motorcycle.

Plan to visit the many malls and markets, each with its own character. See the most fashion-forward Cambodian and international boutiques at the Sovanna Shopping Center. Go from café to shop within the air-conditioned AEON Mall, one of the biggest in Cambodia. Then head to NagaWorld Casino for gambling and entertainment.

Wander through the manicured lawns of Samdech Hun Sen Park, which extends to the water, to see the impressive architecture of the Independence Monument. Learn how Cambodians live their spiritual lives in the area’s visually arresting temples, from Wat Langka to Wat Moha Montrei.

Do not forget the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, in a former Khmer Rouge prison, a sobering reminder of how far the country has come.

Chamkar Mon is the southernmost district of central Phnom Penh. Served by several of the new public bus lines that traverse the main axes into the city, the neighborhood is relatively easy to get around by bus, tuk tuk, motorcycle or taxi. Drive to Chamkar Mon in about 20 minutes from Phnom Penh International Airport or less than 10 minutes from the railway station. The ferry station is located in Chamkar Mon’s northeastern corner.

Chamkar Mon’s wealth of embassies means the district is generally fairly friendly to expats and tourists, especially in the busiest areas.

Finish the day in Chamkar Mon with a stop at the Phsar Tuol Tompoung Market, familiarly known as the Russian Market, where souvenirs, clothing and food are readily available.
