Latest News
In March 2015, Viking River Cruises christened 12 new vessels, including 10 of its Viking Longships and two custom vessels that will sail the Elbe River. This brings Viking’s total river fleet size to 60, with plans to continue expanding as they have been. The two specially designed ships for the Elbe River itinerary will double the company’s capacity on the Elbe River for 2015. The 10 new Viking Longships will sail to various parts of Europe, including three of Viking’s most popular itineraries, sailing along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.

About Viking River Cruises

Viking River Cruises was established in 1997 with the purchase of four Russian ships; the company initially catered to European passengers. The following year, additional ships were acquired. Viking expanded into the American market in 2000; as a result of additional purchases and new builds, today the company operates a fleet of 31 ships with nearly 6,000 berths. Viking also owns many docks in Europe, ensuring prime docking locations for easy guest access and the ability to walk directly into town in many ports of call.

Now in its 18th year, Viking River Cruises currently offers cruises and cruisetours in Europe, Russia, Ukraine, China, Southeast Asia and Egypt, marketed primarily to North American, British and other European customers as well as in Australia and New Zealand. Most of its ships have been built or fully refurbished since 2000 and have all outside staterooms with picture windows, sliding doors (“French balconies”) or full balconies (“verandas”). Additional in-room amenities include televisions, safes and refrigerators; public areas include restaurants, bars, lounges, sun decks, libraries and onboard boutiques. All ships are air-conditioned and some offer elevators.

In 2012, Viking River Cruises introduced an entirely new kind of river cruising vessel, the Viking Longships. Named for prominent figures in Norse mythology, these ships have innovative patent-pending features including Veranda Suites, full-size Veranda Staterooms and an indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace. Viking has been introducing new ships nearly every year for the past decade, with 12 ships christened in 2015.

And wherever you sail, you will find enhancements reflecting your itinerary—it is all part of experiencing the local culture.

Our restaurant is a casual yet elegant dining room that can accommodate all guests at a single seating. Sit anywhere you like—dining together is a great way to get to know your traveling companions.

Accommodations

Every Viking River Cruises stateroom has a river view—there are no “inside” staterooms—and all have private bathrooms. The vast majority of staterooms offer hotel-style beds, in-room safe and flat-panel TV; some have small refrigerators as well. Depending on ship and stateroom category, guests may have an outdoor veranda, a French balcony or a picture window from which to view each day’s passing scenery.

Fellow Passengers

Viking River Cruises guests are ages 12 up; a typical guest is 55 or older but this varies greatly depending on the destination. Viking guests tend to be sophisticated travelers—many have cruised before, some on ocean cruising ships and some on river cruising ships—but some guests experience Europe for the first time on a river cruise with Viking. Guests may be a nuclear or extended family, friends traveling together or groups.
Smoking Policy
There is no smoking allowed in cabins or in any indoor area. Each Viking ship has a designated outdoor smoking area, usually on the Sun Deck.

Explore the Ships

Viking River Cruises' fleet is the largest in the river industry -- it boasts over 60 ships and is rapidly expanding. All of the vessels are geared to the English-speaking market.

Viking has been introducing new ships almost every year for the last decade, with the addition of more than 40 ships added to the fleet just since 2012. All ships feature sleek Scandinavian design, larger cabins with more storage space, lounges with panoramic views, and, on Viking Longships, an indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace allows for an open-air dining experience.
