Cape Breton Cottage, Off the Beaten Path... Spectacular Ocean/Mountain Views!

If you are looking for something off the beaten path, you have found it! Out at the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the cottage is located at St. Margaret's village, in Bay St. Lawrence. From the 8x28 foot front deck you have a panoramic, unobstructed, undeveloped view as the sun sets into the ocean. In season, you can enjoy the local lobster or snow crab caught in the bay in front of you.

Not far off the Cabot Trail, the cottage is a good base for golf at Highland Links in Ingonish (one of the top-rated courses in the world), whale watching or deep sea fishing from the nearby fisherman's wharf or the Hike the Highlands Festival. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is just 10 miles away where there are hiking trails and other activities in the summer. Our family spots at least one moose and one bear at this park every year! It is a thrill for the kids!

Right in the village is a friendly community center with internet access (as well as ping pong for the kids and a basketball hoop). There is a local grocery with all the basics. Right near the community center is an ice cream stand that is great for a quick dinner as well.

It is a birdwatchers paradise. Watch the eagles soar, the guillemots fly in and out of the cliffs below, or the gannets dive into the ocean from the cottage. You might even see the occasional pod of whales in the bay while you sit relaxing or reading on the deck.

Our stay was absolutely terrific although the weather was not the greatest (Hurrican Lee!). We loved the location and the small fishing village where the property is located is so beautiful. I just can't say enough about the area. The house was so comfortable, clean and in a spot that is gorgeous. We loved it. We will come back if the owners will have us!!!

The most magical place
We stayed at this property for the last two weeks of August 2023. It was the most wonderful holiday. The cottage is perfect (amazing views, comfy beds, great water pressure, fully stocked with the necessities) and the area is exceptionally beautiful. You can wake up to the sunrise and watch the sunset from the back deck. The cottage is surrounded by wildflowers, hares, mountains, birds of prey and various other creatures. There is a (fantastic) whale watching boat tour that leaves from the harbor, which is about 5 minutes from the cottage. There is great food and good grocery options about 20 minutes drive away from the cottage. The beaches and coast are beautiful and there is tons to do in the National Park, also very very nearby. The wifi has also been upgraded since some previous posts and was super fast and reliable. We're heading back here next summer and are already looking forward to it.

The most stunning view in Nova Scotia
We have been staying here for years and adore it and Bay St. Lawrence. Stunning views in all types of weather and the charming cottage is perfectly set up for a week or longer stay. We hike, blueberry pick, whale watch (have spotted from the deck many times), fish, golf kayak, swim and enjoy the local restaurants. We will be back (again)!

Breathtaking views and a return to the simple life…
This was our 2nd visit back to this amazing part of the world, and we loved it. The location is perfect for an East coast experience, and the cabin is simple and very comfortable with all of the basics covered…it is the exact balance that we want to unplug and unwind, and we will certainly will continue to cherish our time there for years to come!! We wouldn’t change a thing and would highly recommend this gem!

Exhilarating long view
We have had the privilege of staying at this cottage several time over the years and there is a reason we keep coming back. If you long for peace in a pristinely clean little cottage that has long views looking out over the bay, perfect sunsets, blueberries and rabbits on the hill that your cottage is perched, fresh seafood, mountain hikes, a deck to read on - than this is your heaven! We have only ever had great experiences here and memories that sustain us year after year! This year we saw pilot whales and a RIGHT WHALE from the deck. We could actually HEAR the whales. I mean, come ON.

My heart belongs to the deep blue sea to all the lost souls of fishermen who were once alive & free.
There is nothing particularly spectacular about the cottage per se. However, when you come over the hill and see her for the first time you are just in awe. She is unpretentious. You can’t get over that this little structure offers protection for you…..so you may take in the freshest of air and grandest of horizons in an never ending sea. This house has a bountiful soul that extends to the sea that you will be regenerated by. There are binoculars there but we brought our own. I’ve never in my life have been able to see the stars being born out of the horizon through my binoculars. It was hard to tell where the sky began as it appeared seamless from the ocean. Daily I would look for Bald Eagles and whales. On the last day while drinking my morning coffee, I look out and right in front were three Bald Eagles gliding along the coast. A gift on my last day. There was also the cutest little Jack Rabbit and daily Hummingbirds that feed on the Honeysuckle Bush by the door. There are few places left where one feels like they are the only human on earth and this place offers that. My only suggestion and this is for people who want to stream and or watch television. There is a small television where one can hook up to your device. Because of the remoteness (this includes many places on the island) we downloaded everything we wanted to watch on my Ipad before we arrived and hooked that up. We also bought our own Fire-stick from Amazon. We had Netflix and Prime and local news on the stick. We enjoy watching tv before going to bed and this worked out perfectly. There are also many games at the house which we had fun playing. Remote parts of the island are not set up with the most up to date fiber optic’s for super fast internet and multiple streaming devices. That is fine with me. A small price to pay in exchange for the beauty and peace. One more suggestion. Make sure to bring most of the food you will need. There is a small Co-op that carried small baggies of many staples like rice, sugar, flour many items… All organic too! I wish I would have brought from home a small baggie of baking power, baking soda and a few spices that we use regularly. There are a few at the house for you use which was nice. There was also a great clothes line for washing a few items by hand to be hung to dry. There is a laundromat a half hour down the road if needed. I am glad we found this place and thank you Katy for sharing. Shawn, Jess and Boe!

Solitude and Stars
My wife and I enjoyed two weeks at this charming cottage. It combined so many things we look for in a vacation, and badly needed after 18 months of COVID lockdowns in our town. Vast ocean views peppered by fishing - by both the local fisherman and the high diving Gannets. Mountainous terrain with excellent hiking, fresh air, and regular bald eagle sightings. The solitude and starry skies that come with a remote location on the outskirts of a quaint village. We hope to visit again when we can make it out east. Thank you for sharing this rare gem of a place.

Great escape!
This is the perfect spot to get off the grid and back to nature. Peaceful and private, we had beautiful views of the bay and St. Margaret's Village. Be sure to visit the Skyline trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and get out to see the whales and seals if the seas are calm. For an interesting drive with great seafood chowder at the top, a visit to Meat Cove is a must ... but suggest you don't go on a windy or rainy day!

No words...
You know I thought for days how I would describe this Cabin and it’s location and I couldn’t find the words to do so...too many to chose from. Katy for one is the most accommodating person I have ever dealt with...her responses were swift all of the time.. We needed to reach out to her as our original arrival date ( Saturday September 8th ) was the same date that Hurricane Dorian was going to lash the area....we were hoping to push back our date as we didn’t want to be there when it hit...thankfully the Cabin was not going to be occupied and she completely agreed that it was a good idea! So we arrived on the Tuesday instead giving Dorian plenty of time to clear out. As we turned on the road leading up to the Cabin I was fully out the sunroof filming right to the point the cabin was in full sight ( it truly is secluded ) and if you could only hear and see the video lol ! I was so emotional....wow wow and wow! This cabin and it’s surroundings were more than we could have imagined.. Upon entering ,the cleanliness was first and foremost very obvious. It had everything we needed...no matter where you stood in the cabin the windows allowed for the most spectacular views! The weather wasn’t always good and on one morning it was downright cold lol! But the purpose of this part of our East Coast trip was simple...Rest and relaxation and this cabin didn’t disappoint. We loved watching the ships pass in the night and our binoculars were literally around our necks all of the time...the Eagles were so fun to watch...we read...we listened to Rita McNeill’s CD more than once.....and we only ventured out to eat at the Chowder House on two occasions but other than that we stayed in the Cabin or on the deck...we bought plenty of finger foods to eat later in the evenings as we watched the sunsets...I could go on and on....but you need to experience this place for yourself... This cabin and everything around it will forever be stamped in our minds and in our hearts... Thank you.....

Heaven on Earth
This house is in the most beautiful spot one can possibly imagine. Obviously well loved and cared for with great owner communication. You can do as much or as little as you like. We’d likely have been content watching the changing sea and sky, but did venture out each day. Great hikes at Meat Cove and White Point and great beachcombing at Cabot Landing. Nice little museum nearby for a rainy day. Definitely hope to return to explore more of Cape Breton...or just sit and enjoy.

The pictures do not do justice for the view and the area. The cottage is cozy and well maintained. Even though we had a very windy night (le cuete winds) and one severe thunderstorm the cottage was cozy and secure. There was so much to do in the area that we were never bored and in our free time we enjoyed the deck.

Katy's Cottage - a Cape Breton Delight!
As so many previous visitors have noted in their heartfelt entries in the guest book on the coffee table, Katy's Cottage is indeed a little "slice of heaven". My sister and I (both Albertans) were blessed to have a friend of the owner - and also a resident of Bay St. Lawerence AND our niece! - as our local tour guide. So we truly had the TOTAL CAPE BRETON EXPERIENCE here. Welcome to a part of Canada that is a gorgeous and joyful and unique universe unlike any other you will find anywhere. If you want to relax somewhere in a beyond beautiful setting and meet up with the friendliest people on the planet - from artisans to crab and lobster fishing experts to musicians to community centre volunteers - this is the place for you! Tips? Leave your fancy clothes at home and make sure you are on the deck at the cottage - camera ready - for the sunsets!

Outstanding in Every Way!
The cottage is impeccably clean and well-appointed. We never felt lacking in anything at all. It's also exceedingly well-built; we had a couple of days with heavy rains and 50-mph winds, and the place was solid as a rock. The owner is very prompt in responding to questions, and the property manager is amazing; she (and her husband) were both prompt and extremely helpful to us whenever we had the slightest need for help. This was our second year at this wonderful place - with a blue bay out front and mountains out back, it's a great place to chill and enjoy the scenery, as well as a terrific home base for exploring Cape Breton Highlands. We're hoping for a third year next summer!
