Spectacular mansions and grounds overlook the three lakes of Shichahai. The neighborhood has botanical gardens and glorious parks stretching north from Tiananmen Square. Stroll around the lakes on a warm day with your family to appreciate the stunning scenery.
At the center of the district lies vast Houhai Lake, which is crossed by stone bridges and surrounded by restaurants with excellent views of the water. Stroll through the Lotus Market Marina at its southern end and skate on the ice when the lake freezes over in winter. Wander across the elegant Jinding Bridge near the district’s namesake metro stop.
Look at the majestic Shezheng Mansion Mahao and the nearby Prince Chun’s Mansion. Other highlights around this lake are the Xicheng Shichahai Children’s Playground, Wild Duck Island and the Zhangbo Jupansu Former Residence Memorial Hall.
Enjoy the local and international cuisine at the many restaurants, bars and teahouses on your way north to the Xihai Sea, a smaller neighboring lake. In its northwestern corner is scenic Huitongci Park, with its sculptures and gardens.
The southernmost of the three basins is Qianhai lake. Admire the sculptures marking its adjacent Nine Dragon Screen and study the charming architecture of the Xitian Fanjing and Xiancantan buildings. Stroll south along the meandering lakeside trails and explore Haopujian, a “garden within a garden.” Cross the Yong'an Bridge to see the iconic White Tower and Yong’an Monastery on the islet of Qiongdao.
Find the fascinating district of Shichahai a little north of central Beijing.
