Choose from a range of West End musicals and plays and revel in the sophistication of a night at the ballet or opera in this historic theater.

Visit the Brighton Theatre Royal, one of the principal culture and dramatic performance hubs in the city. Dating back to the early 19th century, the theater has a prominent redbrick façade that serves as a fine example of Regency architecture. Select from a diverse array of shows here, ranging from upscale opera and plays to family-pleasing entertainment shows.

Enter the majestic auditorium and marvel at the golden tiers and balconies. It has a capacity of 952 seats, which are spread across four stories. Enjoy the excellent acoustics and marvel at the glorious proscenium area around the stage. Over the years, such esteemed actors as Judi Dench, Laurence Olivier and Charlton Heston have graced this stage.

During intermission, order drinks and snacks from one of the bars available at every level. You can also get food from The Parlour, the theater’s modern café overlooking the street.

Attend some of the workshops that take place in this historic complex. Creative Learning events and courses teach students and theater enthusiasts about a range of acting and performing styles.

Find out about the rich history of the theater, which was inaugurated in 1807 at the behest of King George IV. Learn how it opened with a rendition of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. These dramatic performances have become a major part of the annual Brighton Festival in May.

Purchase tickets for shows from the box office, which opens daily from morning until early evening. Rooms in the theater are available to rent for conferences and events.

The Brighton Theatre Royal is on the western side of the Pavilion Gardens in the center of Brighton. Take a bus to a nearby stop and walk here or travel by car and leave your vehicle in the NCP parking lot for a fee. While in this central district, make sure to check out other gems such as the India Gate, the Brighton War Memorial and the Original House of Correction.
