Knez Mihailova Street is a shopping avenue in central Belgrade popular with local residents and vacationers. It is among the most iconic parts of the city and has a history stretching back as far as the Romans. Explore the shops and restaurants of this eclectic street with your family and friends.

Snap photos of the elegant 19th-century buildings with intricate façades and colorful flower displays. Many of these structures once belonged to the city’s elite families, before the Communist government seized them in the 1950s. Browse the items for sale in the bookshops and cafés that have replaced these affluent homes. Cultural centers, restaurants and boutiques combine to cultivate an international setting.

Marvel at the stylish façade of the Serbian Academy of Science and Art, which has a large exhibition hall for concerts and performances. In front of the building, inspect the pyramidal sculpture containing the coordinates of the city.

The northern part of the street is where you will find the City Library. Admire this stunning building that once held the city’s most majestic hotel, the Srpska Kruna. Head south along this wide, pedestrianized street for several blocks to get to the Zepter Museum and examine its collection of artworks. See a performance at the nearby National Theater and explore the various exhibits of the National Museum.

Reach Terazije Square, the vast plaza that marks the southern end of the street. Marvel at the elaborate architecture of the Balkan Hotel and the Moskva Hotel. Among the highlights on the square is the Albanija Palace. It was the tallest building in the Balkans region when it was built in the 1930s.

Note that most shops along the boulevard open from morning until late evening. Restaurants generally stay open even later.

Knez Mihailova Street is between the Kalemegdan Citadel and the downtown area of Belgrade. Ride the tram to the Kalemegdan stop at the northern end of the street or take a bus to one of the many stops parallel to it. See nearby landmarks, such as the Ethnographic Museum and Studentski Park.
