Follow devotees to Chuguji Temple (Chūgū-ji) to delve into the history and traditions of Buddhism in Nara. Enjoy the temple’s peace and tranquility and spend time marveling at a Japanese National Treasure.
The grounds of Chuguji Temple were originally part of the palace of Empress Anahobe no Hashihito. Prince Shotoku Taishi, the son of the empress, turned it into a nunnery and temple in A.D. 621 and it later had close connections to the imperial house of Japan.
Crowds gather at the Main Hall to admire the beauty of a seated Buddha made of camphor wood. It dates to the Asuka period, from the 6th to 8th centuries. It elegantly depicts Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, who is said to be the future Buddha in Buddhist theology. While contemplating the Buddhist faith, appreciate the lifelike artistry of this Japanese National Treasure and gaze at the gentle smile. On either side of the statue are depictions of Ashuku Nyorai and Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddhas of wisdom and medicine.
Move slowly through the Main Hall to the Tenjukoku Shucho Mandala. This is a replica of an embroidery commissioned in 622 by the widow of Asuka-era prince Shotoku Taishi. Study the intricate scenes, including numerous tortoises portraying eternal life in heaven. The original piece had 100 tortoises and is Japan’s oldest existing embroidery. Its remains are stored at Nara National Museum.
Linger for a while to study the graceful architecture and enjoy the temple’s soothing ambiance. In April, roses bloom in dazzling colors around the Main Hall. Look for a stone engraved with a poem by renowned Japanese poet and calligrapher Aizu Yaichi.
Located in central Ikaruga, the temple is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Hōryūji train station. Walk for 20 minutes from the station or catch a bus that travels to Horyujimon-mae. The Horyuji Temple is also nearby. Chuguji Temple is open daily and charges an admission fee.
