Ikaruga is a town surrounded by verdant countryside. Dating back to the 7th century, Ikaruga takes its name from the former imperial palace of Prince Shōtoku which once stood here. Spend a day visiting Buddhist temples that are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Enjoy walks in nature, sample typical Nara cuisine and learn about traditional crafts.
A good place to start your visit is at the Nara Ikaruga Tourism Waikaru information center. Pick up brochures about local attractions and events. The bikes and buggies available for rent offer a fun way to travel between the town’s historic and natural landmarks.
The UNESCO-protected Buddhist Monuments of the Hōryū-ji Area feature some of the world’s oldest-surviving wooden structures. Admire Buddha sculptures, murals and an emblematic five-story pagoda at Horyuji Temple. Hokiji Temple is revered for its three-story pagoda and an 11-faced gilded bodhisattva. Other nearby temples to visit include Chuguji Temple, Horinji Temple and Kichdenji Temple.
Close to the Horyuji Temple is Fujinoki Tumulus, a 30-foot-tall (9-meter) burial mound thought to originate from the late 6th century. Excavations of the mound uncovered a sarcophagus, arrowheads, bronze horse gear, earthenware, jewelry and swords. See these items on display at the Ikaruga Cultural Heritage Center.
Appreciate the town's natural delights with a stroll along the banks of the Tatsuta River. Stop for a picnic while admiring the springtime cherry blossoms. In Momjigaoka Park a trail winds to the summit of Mount Mimuro, from where views reach over the townscape, river and lush rice fields.
Restaurants in the town serve traditional fare from the Nara region. Sample tatsuta-age, which is chicken marinated in soy sauce and then fried. Shops and studios host regular hands-on workshops. Try lavender stick crafting, tofu making and weaving.
Located in the Nara Prefecture, Ikaruga is a popular daytrip destination from Nara and Osaka. Take the train to Hōryūji Station and then travel around on foot, by bike, buggy or public bus.
