Go on a scenic drive along the twists and turns of the picturesque Crown Range Road which, at an altitude of 3678 feet (1121 meters), is the highest main road in New Zealand. Stop to purchase hot beverages and snacks from one of the roadside carts. Arrive early in the morning to skip the crowds and watch a glorious sunrise. Hike through the Pisa Conservation Area and peer through the clouds at the Crown Range Summit.
Among the highlights in the region is the Cardrona Bra Fence, where visitors began attaching their bras in the late 1990s. Snap photos of this unusual landmark and consider giving a donation here for the benefit of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.
Forming a stunning backdrop to the fence of bras are dramatic mountains and rolling green meadows. Go horseback riding with a tour operator to travel up to the mountain peaks for unforgettable vistas. You can also rent a horse or quad bike. Take a tour of the Cardrona Distillery and enjoy a tasting of the complex’s whiskey, gin or vodka.
Have a meal and a few drinks in one of the country pubs lining the road. Before dinner, watch the sun descend beyond the horizon and turn the sky red. Stay overnight in a hotel or homestead and step outside to gaze up at the stars. Attend an open-air concert at the Rhythm and Alps venue.
The Crown Range lies between Queenstown and Wanaka, on the South Island of New Zealand. Take the Crown Range Road that skirts the southern side of Arrowtown, a little northeast of Lake Wakatipu.
