About this property
A remote cabin surrounded by Pine, Birch and Aspen trees, five miles to Deadwood
One mile of gravel driveway leads to The Rustic Cabin; this driveway can be rough at times and is privately maintained. The cabin is situated on 29 private acres surrounded on two sides by the Black Hills Forest Service. There are hiking trails leading into the woods directly from the cabin and if you are lucky and walk quietly you will see deer, jack rabbits, turkey and possibly elk depending on the time of year. Recently we have had black bear sightings in the hills, so be aware if out on a hike.
Take a break from technology as there is No WIFI and limited cell service. Instead in the evenings enjoy star gazing from the porch or gazebo. Or take a short drive to the historic gambling town of Deadwood five miles north on Hwy 385.
Inside, you'll find a fully equipped kitchen with a stove, oven, dorm size refrigerator, beverage refrigerator, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and a grill on the covered front porch, allowing you to easily prepare delicious meals. Relax in the living room and unwind with the Bose wave radio or a movie on the DVD player. There is a view of the pond and gazebo from the covered front porch of the cabin. During the dry months of July & August the pond is very low as it fluctuates due to the water table.
Because the nighttime temperature range in the mid 50’s to mid 70’s we do not offer air conditioning.
There is trailer parking for your ATV, side x side or motorcycle trailer. Just go past the driveway that leads to the cabin then straight ahead towards the gazebo to park your trailer.
The Black Hills motorized trail system can be accessed at the Steel Wheel Gas and Convenience store located 1 mile south from the cabin on Hwy 385. A permit is needed to use the Forest Service trail system. Permits are available for purchase at Steel Wheel. As of July 2024, Forest Service closed trail 538.1G and trail 247.1E which were used to access the motorized trail system from the cabin.
Our home is also on the property, and you will see it first as you cross through the gate. The cabin has its own driveway access and is separated from our home by the small pond and gazebo. Our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.
Bill designed and built the cabin which he finished in 2018. The cabin measures 12 × 26 with a 10 x 12 loft, a full bath, kitchen and a queen size bed in the loft (an earlier guest commented that the open stairs are steep). The living room area has a reclining couch and a comfortable recliner. The Samsung smart TV’s reception is by antenna with a few local channels.
Enjoy the convenience of being minutes from Deadwood and centrally located to all the famous attractions the Black Hills have to offer. Whether you're seeking a cozy retreat or an adventure-filled getaway, our cabin is the perfect destination.

Very nice property! Comfortable, well-appointed, beautiful location! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - abundant wildlife, the pond, deck were wonderful. We highly recommend this cabin for anyone who enjoys a peaceful, serene, private location, but is also close to Deadwood, a convenience gas & grocery store and Black Hills attractions. We hope to be back!
This was our third stay at the Rustic Cabin and we will definitely be back. We love the quiet setting, yet it's close to everything we love to do in the northern Black Hills.
My partner and I stayed for a long weekend and it was a perfect cozy retreat. Hiking trails right outside the door but close enough to Deadwood for some fun nights out! We would definitely stay here again for our next trip
This a wonderful cabin centrally located to all the places we went - Black Hills Caverns, 1880 Train, Spearfish Canyon, Devil's Tower, Deadwood, etc. It was perfect for a couple getaway. We loved that it was not near neighbors!
Cute little cabin, off the main road, nice and peaceful. Very clean, would recommend for others looking to stay off the beaten path, who want to enjoy some peace and quiet, with beautiful scenery.
We loved this cabin that had comforts of home while still maintaining that cabin in the woods feel. The upstairs loft was fun, and we especially enjoyed the skylight/ high ceiling in the bathroom. The host went out of her way to be helpful. It’s a perfect location for day trips around the Black Hills.
Awesome place hidden in the trees. Had a awesome time getting away from the business of Sturgis and enjoys the hiking trails right outside the front door. Will definitely be back
The cabin & property were wonderful a second time around. The stay was peaceful, quiet & has a nice trail/forest service road for a walk. Host is so friendly and makes sure you have everything you need! Really a beautiful place to have a serene atmosphere.
We just wanted a simple, quiet and remote place to relax while we explored the Hills area. It was perfect for us. It's well equipped and very comfortable. Highly recommend it!
This was our 3rd time staying at this cabin and we love it every time. Bill and Lynn are the best! You will have the most relaxed time staying here. It’s a great place to slow down and enjoy nature. We will be back again next year!
This was our 4th time staying at this wonderful cabin. It has become a place my husband and I can't wait to go to every year. Perfect size for a couple with all the necessities. Love how peaceful and quite this spot is and so close to town. Will definitely be back again!!
This small rustic cabin was a perfect secluded spot following an active day touring and hiking the northern Black Hills. Nestled among birch and pine trees we enjoyed watching a large variety of birds. No wifi and limited TV channels encouraged us to “unplug” and just enjoy. We hope to come back.
Peaceful, rustic retreat with all amenities & great hosts.
We rolled to our hosts rustic cabin location on motorcycles from Minnesota to attend the 84th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and do some side tours of Deadwood, Leads, Custer, Custer State Park & Mount Rushmore. Our hosts Lynn & Bill were very gracious, accommodating, friendly and attentive hosts. The rustic cabin setting was perfect. I will definitely be back!!! Thank you!
Exactly as listed. My husband and I came for our anniversary and we wanted a place that we could disconnect from the outside world. It was perfect! Close enough to see some beautiful scenery but perfectly tucked away to enjoy peace and quiet! We will defiantly be back!!
This was my first solo trip, it only took me 61 years. I had everything I needed. The cabin and hosts were awesome. The hiking was right there and no noise except the birds. Great place for reading on the deck. Would definitely go back.
This cabin is top drawer, both in location and quality. Everything inside and out is amazing. The details of construction are beautiful. The hosts are gracious and easy to communicate with. We saw wildlife without even leaving the deck, but it's also convenient to lots of attractions. Bed is comfortable and kitchen had everything we needed for food prep. On a side note, you don't need bottled water, the water from the tap is delicious!
Long story short - book the cabin! You won’t regret it. Lynn and Bill are excellent hosts, and their cabin is filled with all sorts of cute details that tie the place together making it feel more like a home than a rental. I booked the cabin for a girls trip with my bestie and we thoroughly enjoyed the property - great views, especially star gazing at night from the gazebo. It served as the perfect home base while we explored western SD. The cabin had everything we could have needed. Very thoughtful hosts - definitely looking to come back to the area at some point in the future and will seek out the rustic cabin for sure!! Thank you for having us!

Very clean and quiet. Scenery was awesome and the area is remote. I would stay again
Cabin was very clean, host was very friendly and easy to contact if need be. The stairs are a little steep and the roof is a bit low over the bed so be careful. The cabin is amazing and very secluded lots of animals running around like deer and turkeys.
