Gers

A gently flowing river divides two sections of this city with a district of bistros and boutique stores looking toward museums and a superb cathedral.

Climb the long stone staircase in Auch to discover superb views and historic structures. Pass the time people-watching in bustling squares or shop for fashionable clothes and shoes.

Start you tour of Auch on the western bank of the tranquil Gers River. Gaze up to see a backdrop of cream-colored buildings rising into the distance. Climb up the Escalier Monumental. Rising 115 feet (35 meters) this 234-step staircase brings you out in the Place de la République, the town’s central square. Pick up maps from the visitor information center and marvel at the panoramic views along the Gers Valley and toward the Pyrenees.

Head to the square with the magnificent Cathédrale Sainte-Marie. Building construction was begun in 1489 and the high twin towers were added during the 16th century. Step through the main entrance to discover exquisite carved choir stalls and 18 bright stained-glass windows.

A short walk south leads you to the open Place Salinis and the imposing Tour d’Armagnac. This dark stone structure stands 130 feet (40 meters) high and was used as a prison throughout the 14th century.

Farther north meanwhile is the Musée des Jacobins. Set within a light, spacious 14th-century convent, this fascinating museum has an impressive collection of pre-Columbian artwork and relics from Gascon culture.

Wander back toward the river to the eastern district. Among the narrow, winding streets are diverse stores and markets where you can purchase unique garments and handmade souvenirs. End the day finding the perfect trinket to remember your trip or just relax outside a small café and plan tomorrow’s adventure.

Auch is part of the Midi-Pyrénées region in southern France. The city is 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Toulouse and a 7-hour drive south of Paris. Stay at pleasant local hotels and enjoy a range of traditional food including excellent fish and meat.

Discover a beautiful network of streets and walkways that have changed little since the Middle Ages in Auch.
