Mount Hakodate

Appreciate captivating views of Hakodate’s skyline, surrounding coast and glittering city lights from atop this central city mountain, accessible via a scenic cable car.

Mount Hakodate (Hakodateyama) crowns the southern end of Hakodate’s city center and peninsula area. Reach the top of the densely wooded mountain to experience unbeatable views of the cityscape and surrounding coastline. The 1,096-foot- (334-meter-) tall mountain offers a panoramic vista of Hakodate’s sprawling urban center, which is quite breathtaking at night. Visit the mountain just after sunset to see night falling over the city and a sea of twinkling city lights.

Select from several ways to reach the viewing platforms at the top of the mountain. Walk or cycle along scenic paths or catch the Hakodateyama Ropeway. This picturesque cable car offers magnificent views from a comfortable carriage. Enjoy the panoramic vistas as you ascend the mountain. The ropeway takes 3 minutes to reach the top of the mountain and stops at a pleasant observation area. Walk around this observation area for different views of the city.

On a clear day, enjoy extensive views of the peninsula and distant coastlines. If you visit as the sun sets, you’ll encounter the captivating sight of Hakodate’s city center illuminating with colorful lights. Snap a photograph of the city lights as a souvenir of your trip. Purchase additional souvenirs and gifts from the on-site gift shop. Grab a snack or quick meal from the café or cafeteria-style restaurant located on top of the mountain.

Experience the mountain in two different ways by catching the cable car up and enjoying a relaxed stroll down. The ropeway departs from Hakodate’s Motomachi district, about a 10-minutes walk from Jujigai tram stop. Buses also operate between Hakodate Station and the summit between April and November. Car access is limited at certain times of the day. The mountain is free to visit but the ropeway and buses have fees.

Mount Hakodate’s views transform throughout the seasons, from clear fall days to foggy humid conditions in summer. In winter, view the city majestically blanketed in a coating of white snow.

The night view is nice, but the site could not handle large capacity of visitors and the cable car line was very very long which made us standing outside with kids while snowing.
