Dabble in a variety of adventure sports, admire an enormous aqueduct and spot interesting geological formations at this ecotourism park.

Prepare for a fun-filled day of activities at Parque Ecoturistico Los Arcos del Saucillo. Try thrill-seeking adventure pursuits and discover an architectural masterpiece while exploring an area of outstanding natural beauty. An excursion to this ecotourism park is one of the major attractions for visitors to the region surrounding the town of Huichapan.

Dominating the park is El Saucillo Aqueduct, built in the 1700s to convey water to a nearby hacienda and aid the transportation of goods across the deep canyon. It features 14 arches, the biggest of which reaches a height of 144 feet (44 meters), making it one of the world’s tallest aqueducts. Walk down into the valley, stand at the base of the aqueduct and experience a shrinking sensation. The bridge section offers panoramic views of the surrounding rugged landscapes.

Enjoy a range of outdoor sports on a tour of the park organized by one of Huichapan’s many travel operators. Traverse the rugged forested terrain by foot, horseback and mountain bike.

Hike along the path of a former riverbed that once passed beneath the aqueduct. Pause to peek inside caves and tunnels that have been carved naturally out of the rocks. Marvel as the sunlight illuminates the caves through cracks and crevices. Look for examples of indigenous cave paintings, which depict animals, plants and tribal traditions. Wildflowers and huge cactus trees grow alongside the trails.

The ecotourism park is about a 20-minute drive southwest from downtown Huichapan. Organized tours are a great way to visit the attraction and include knowledgeable guides. Alternatively, catch a local bus or take a taxi. Stay overnight in Huichapan, one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) and visit attractions such as colonial palaces, pretty churches and leafy gardens. Parque Ecoturistico Los Arcos del Saucillo is open daily.
