There is definitely a community feeling in Tantolunden Park, a beloved destination for locals, tourists and Stockholmers who take advantage of the green space between visits to hip nearby neighborhoods. The park is known especially for its allotment gardens, more than 100 plots outfitted with neat, bright wooden cottages. Follow paths winding up the hill, leading to the allotment gardens that have been lovingly tended by Stockholmers since 1915. Even in winter, admire the cheery colors, as manicured flowerbeds are replaced by snow banks but the little wooden houses continue to shine brightly.
Bring a picnic to one of Stockholm’s most picturesque lunch spots, as boats and ferries drift by on the water below. After lunch, play on the miniature golf course, whose traps echo the design of the park in miniature. Check the schedule to see what’s playing at the open-air theater.
Get some exercise by jogging up the hill with fellow athletes. Alternatively, take advantage of the pair of outdoor gyms, which offer a variety of other forms of exercise. In summer, jump in the water and do a few laps.
If more fun than exercise is on your agenda, throw a disc around on the Frisbee golf course, get a team together for beach volleyball or bring a sled to go exhilaratingly fast down the snow-covered hillside.
Tantolunden Park is located just south of Central Stockholm on Södermalm island, adjacent to the newly gentrifying district of Hornstull and near SoFo. Get here from Stockholm Central Station in 8 minutes by car, 16 minutes by subway or 40 minutes on foot. Limited parking is available in the area, but it is generally easiest to explore on foot.
