Go surfing on sand or at sea at a popular beach flanked by large dunes and known for its excellent waves.
Joaquina Beach is popular with surfers in more ways than one. While consistent strong waves create the perfect conditions for surfing, its large dunes attract sand surfers who glide along the terrain at speed. The beach is also known for its views and sporting areas.
The dunes of Joaquina Beach are among the most famous in southern Brazil. Pick up a wooden board and challenge friends and family to a race. If you don’t have your own board, rent one at a nearby store. Keen photographers will enjoy the views of the ocean from the top of the sandy hills. Alternatively, chill out in one of the beach bars with a drink and enjoy the fabulous vistas.
Watch the surfers riding the waves and take your own board out onto the water. Many surfing contests are held at Joaquina Beach including international events.
The beach is approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers) in length, plenty of room for a stroll along the shoreline. You can also walk or jog along the promenade. Play volleyball and football and then cool off with a swim in the sea.
When it’s time for food, try one of the nearby cafés or restaurants. Ask the locals about how the beach got its name. One version is that the name derives from a local woman who was taken by a giant wave. Her husband died at sea and every day she waited patiently on a rock for his boat to come home, until the ocean claimed her.
Relax and enjoy fun and games on the beach long after the sun goes down because it is lit up by lights at night.
Joaquina Beach lies on the east coast of Santa Catarina Island, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Florianopolis, the capital city. Arrive by bus, taxi or rental car and park in the large metered parking lot. The beach has lots of facilities including showers, restrooms, lifeguards and shops selling beachwear and souvenirs.
