Very contemporary open art filled home, three bedrooms each with private indoor/outdoor bath offering beautiful views of both the ocean and mountains from high on a hill. A true experience of being in and surrounded by nature yet in bathed in elegance and art. The location of this property is enough out of town to offer total privacy and yet close enough to get to town and the beach quickly. The serenity is amazing, the views are magic! Due to being high on a hill, there is always a breeze and less mosquitos. The infinity pool invites you to laze or swim laps while you gaze at the ocean. You can literally walk into the pool from both the living room area as well as the master suite. The gourmet kitchen, with lots of amenities, including an ice cream maker, has sliding windows that open up to the mountains so when you are preparing food, you have wonderful views. The yoga deck/art/massage studio, on top is the crowning jewel! You feel like you are on top of the world with a 360 degree view of ocean and mountains and sky, nothing else besides lots of monkeys and birds! Our little family of monkeys traverse the property on a regular basis. You can spend hours watching them play. There are other decks to sun on or relax in the shade. The bedrooms all have private baths with outdoor/indoor showers. Art is integrated everywhere, including the owners light sculptures, architectural glass installations and paintings. The paintings are all for sale and the light sculptures are available for order. All of the furniture was designed by the owner and made specifically for the house. Schedule a massage on the yoga deck with several massage therapists in Samara, enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the monkeys or play in the pool. There intentionally are NO TV's, however there is internet so you can stay connected, watch movies online and listen to music. This is the place to have a REAL Costa Rican experience of being surrounded by the beauty and serenity of the natural environment while also being bathed in elegance. A place to relax, recharge your creative juices and most of all just enjoy! This is not an appropriate property for young children due to the lack of railings on top decks and the fact that the two bedrooms other than master have their own separate entrances from outside for privacy. It is ideal for up to three couples or families with older children. Liberia airport is app 2 hrs away and San Jose airport is 4-5 hours away so unless you arrive in time to make it to the property by 9:00 pm it is best to stay over and arrive the following day. I however do recommend trying to arrive before dark as it is easier to find and get the lay of the land! If your flight is late or some other problem occurs that makes you run late please advise Louise, my neighbor who will be checking you in right away (506) 2656-2462. You will receive a welcome check in letter with check in details, GPS coordinates and basic directions. While the house does not have central air-conditioning, each bedroom has remote controlled air-conditioning and the living room/dining rooms have overhead ceiling fans. These, along with 3 sets of sliding doors, create good air-flow. When thedoors are open, the living space is literally doubled and the refreshing outside ocean breezes can flow through. It is so quiet at night, you will get a really deep sleep and wake up rested and ready for your days adventure. Walk right into the pool to have your coffee, take a swim to get a great start to your day! ## Property amenities ### Beach - Beach towels ### Pool/Spa - Hot tub - Massage - Outdoor pool - Private pool ### Internet - This property was absolutely beautiful, the views are incredible, and the wildlife does not disappoint. Howler monkeys, parakeets in the trees, gorgeous, tropical flora, a little piece of heaven in tbe hills above Samara. Close enough to town for ease, while getting beauty and peace to come back to! We could not have asked for a better place to stay for our Costa Rica vacation. The house is well equipped and very clean. It is secluded yet close to town. The pool was an added bonus, a fantastic place to cool off after the beach, or start the day. We’ll be back! ##### William L. Stayed 7 nights in May 2022 Archival ### 8/10 Good #### Tara V. Mar 6, 2014 #### Paradise! The house was so fantastic and peaceful! Enjoyed all of the amenities of a modern western home in the beauty of the forest! It was an open house, so the critters took a couple of days to get used to, but they weren't bad! t great place to get away from the crowded town during the holidays! Deane and Louise were both super sweet and helpful before and during our stay! ##### Tara V. Verified ### 10/10 Excellent #### Chris C. May 18, 2023 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Home away from home We stayed for a month at Casa Candelita and enjoyed everything it and the area had to offer. The place was exactly as advertised, well maintained and well situated. It was fifteen min from downtown Playa Samara as advertised and the roads in had their charms which was also as advertised. The location gave us a chance to enjoy the flora and fauna of guanacaste. Louise was a great helper and Deanne was very responsive when a torrential downpour created a minor issue. Our stay here was one of our best vacation memories. Would recommend. ##### Chris C. Stayed 28 nights in Apr 2023 Archival ### 10/10 Excellent #### Jesus G. Aug 4, 2016 #### Amazing! Our stay was wonderful! the house was very quiet and very clean. It's situated above a hill above the city of Samara which makes it perfect if you want to go into town. The people of Samara are very friendly and have good traditional places to eat. You definitely need 4x4 to get to the place since you climb up a steep hill right before you get to the house but its not too bad. The views within the house are very beautiful within inside and outside of the house. I definitely recommend this house for anyone coming to Costa Rica! ##### Jesus G. We had a spider monkey family visit a couple times. The house is beautiful inside and out and so are the views. It's very relaxing and off the beaten path. The roads are a little rough getting there but that's Costa Rica. We would stay again and highly recommend. I'ts about a 10 - 15 minute drive into Samara. We discovered so many beautiful beaches and waterfalls. Thank you for having this place available on VRBO. We will be back. ##### Jan B. Everything was as advertised, kitchen was fully equipped, we were able to make our own smoothies every morning with the blender in the kitchen and that was a nice surprise! We would definitely recommend a 4 wheel drive to get up the driveway but that is nothing to be intimidated by, it added to the Costa Rican adventure! Town was close enough to enjoy it if you wanted to but for enough away to feel like you’ve completely escaped everything! ##### Ross L. We had a lovely stay at this Casa, We especially enjoyed the pool and the upper deck always a lovely breeze up there. The house is close to Samara and a lot of other beaches not so busy. We did a tour at the Butterfly Jungle ! We never felt the need for air conditioning in the living area as there was always a breeze and cooled down when the sun went down. You can always hear the monkeys in the early morning but on our last day they came right up close in the back yard and were quite vocal!! ##### joanne p. Stayed 20 nights in Feb 2022 Archival ### 10/10 Excellent #### Sarah L. Feb 6, 2016 #### A Slice of Heaven... Deanne's home was exactly what we were looking for in Samara - a beautiful and private sanctuary to come home to after days of beach activities. We really appreciated what we could tell was hard work and lots of thought on Deanne's part for the design and architecture of her retreat - each window and sitting area captured the winds and daylight as they changed throughout the day and offered incredible views. We caught many shooting stars on her rooftop at night and my personal favorite was reading in the early morning under the yoga deck - such beauty! We loved the openness of the house that worked to make sure you were never too far from the natural beauty of Costa Rica. Not to mention, Deanne was extremely responsive and accommodating to our needs. We truly felt like guests in her home! Louise, her long-time friend and Samara neighbor was also a charm. We were so very grateful for their help leading to and during our stay. We were sad to leave but happy to have a great place to stay in Samara! Thank you Deanne! ##### Sarah L. Mar 10, 2023 Liked: Check-in, communication, location Disliked: Cleanliness #### Voyeur House It is important to future renters to have an honest and accurate review so that they can make an informed decision. Not all tastes are the same. It is accurate that the architecture of the house is unique. It reminded us of Frank Lloyd Wright’s style. The property manager, Louise, was very caring and attentive. There were, however, a number of issues with the house. The bedrooms all had air conditioning that worked well. The main living area, however, had none. There were doors and windows on either end of the house to let in a breeze. Problem was, there was no breeze! It was 90 - 95 degrees each day with little to no breeze. During the day, when you could get in and out of the pool it was bearable. At night, however, it was unbearable ##### Rebecca W. What a lovely home and setting, nestled in the jungle about 10 minutes drive from Samara Beach. At first, I wasn't certain, not being on the beach, but it was lovely to come home after a day of surfing and do yoga in the yoga shala on the roof, enjoy time with the howler monkeys, and swim in the beautiful pool. The kitchen was perfectly laid out and stocked-we cooked dinner for ourselves and our kids every single night! The outdoor showers were beautiful and an adventure for our kids, who were 16 and 13\. You do need to have a good 4x4 SUV-they are not kidding about that in the description. It's also a little difficult to find the first time, so make sure that you have a good communication with Louise (the lovely woman on site who helps to care for the house). Don't trust your GPS to get you there! But once you are there...paradise. Great things to do while you are in Samara: surfing, trying a veggie burger at Luv Burger, and you have to try the homemade gelato at Casa Maxou. ##### Andrea M. There is an infinity pool is shaded by a large rosewood tree with a beautiful view out to Playa Buena Vista, about 4 km to the south. It is located about a 20 minute drive from Sámara - one route goes on a heavily trafficked rough road about half of the way, the other route goes through mainly peaceful countryside into Sámara. High clearance 4-wheel drive is truly required especially to get up the steep gravel road to the house and to drive in the area. The pool is great and the driving the back way into Samara is really fun driving through the countryside. There are three bedrooms of differing sizes that each face out to the view of the ocean in the distance, with ample jungle views to the side, though the third has just a daybed in it, suitable for a single person. The house is near the top of a hill in a steep jungle setting. Howler monkeys are heard nearly every day, and we did see a troop during two days during January when there was fruit they liked on a nearby tree. Check-in process went well. We became friends with the neighbor who helped us and getting to know her better and learn from her experiences of living in Costa Rica as an American ex-pat was one of the highlights of our stay. ##### Robert J. The monkeys come through this property almost on a daily basis. The iquanas that you see\~the variety of birds! The sounds at night. If you love nature, you should only stay here at Casa Candelitas. The pool is heavenly. I never thought I was a pool person\~ but it was amazing to have your own personal pool to cool off in. I swam laps every day. It’s super easy to get into town and enjoy the local farmers for delicious fruits and vegetables. The locally made products as well. The Ticos and Ticas are such kind and happy people. The beach at Samara is beautiful. Restaurants right on the beaches edge- Luv Burger was the best! And Loiuse - Casa Candelitas manager is a wealth of knowledge (if you need some) or tremendously respectful of your privacy. Deanne has a tremendous piece of heaven here and to have the opportunity to actually experience it here and share what she has created \~ hurry up and get there! You cannot beat the roof top deck for yoga and meditation and monkey watching! Kitchen has everything you need. We cooked breakfasts and quite a few dinners. It was well stocked like a well lived in home. Thank you Deanne for sharing your casa of light and heaven. 2 weeks wasn’t even long enough! We will be back. ##### Donna c. This house is nicely decorated with a unique layout but was more remote than we thought. The pictures on VRBO were not representative of the current state of the house. It does need TLC. Each 3 bedrooms had their own bathroom, but it is important to know that only the master has the toilet and sink indoor. Although the other bathrooms are connected to the bedrooms (via a door), there is also an outdoor access which was partially screened. It was the same for the master shower. It is not for everyone, and we had to adapt to it. We also ran into few issues. As many houses in CR, only the bedrooms have air conditioning. As for the common living area, there are doors and windows on either end of the house to let in a breeze. The temperature outside was easily 95 to 100 F (35 to 38 Celsius) during our stay with no breeze! It was too hot to cook or sit there in the evening. We decided to use the unused 3rd bedroom to hang out. The air conditioning was not working but was promptly fixed. Unfortunately, we also had a problem with the pool. There's a big tree dropping flowers for 2 weeks during the year. It made the pool dirty and unusable. A pool Cie came to clean it, but it only lasted for one day. The owner was very understanding and offered us a compensation. She had no control over that and did what she could under those circumstances. The highlights of our stay were the visit of the howler monkeys, the view of the sky from the rooftop at night and the meditation penthouse. ##### D D. No Pura Vida - Shocked this property is allowed on VRBO. As a group of well seasoned adult travellers this was where we were to stay the last few days of an amazing 2.5 week trip to Costa Rica. This house was not only dirty, it was unsafe! There was a massive dead scorpion AND spider with decaying leaves in the pool that had obviously been there for some time to welcome us. Filthy door, walls, floors. The upper “yoga” deck had not been cleaned in months!! The pics posted are clearly OLD! It’s been neglected and is run down. There is much general maintenance and repair needed. Including the garage door to be able to pull your vehicle in so it’s secure. No air conditioning. BTW you ABSOLUTELY need air cond. in this location. Leaving windows open is going to invite endless unwelcome insects & animals. Especially since they’re being baited by the garbage we were told to just throw out back! ILLEGAL we’re told. There were zero security measures in place. Well known fact: proper security is necessary in Costa Rica. The safe had been ripped out. We were shown a linen closet with a lock to use instead. Finally, when the neighbor who was checking us in, told us she was recently broken in to TWICE..that was the final straw!! The owner was messaged to see if we could have some of these things addressed. No response. She quickly cancelled our reservation with zero attempt to work with us, and kept all of the $$! Every hotel was booked in Samara, so we ended up in a 10’X12’ room for all 4 of us to share! But at least it was clean & SAFE! ##### Heather B. Mar 18, 2020 Liked: Check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### A Truly Unique and Amazing Experience Casa Candelitas is unlike any other house we have ever rented in Costa Rica. It is "quirky", unique, fun, and incredibly relaxing. It was a little bit of a stretch for us (2 middle-aged couples) to acclimate to the layout and features of the house, at first. But once we let ourselves "be in the moment" at Casa Candelitas - it turned out to a be a wonderful experience for all 4 of us. The front of the living room opens up to the pool, and the four concrete seats that sit right at the edge of the pool. You literally step from the living room into the pool. And from the main master bedroom, as well. The infinity pool was incredibly relaxing and refreshing and we congregated around it frequently. Morning, afternoon, and evening. The "quirks" that we had to get used to: 1) There are no screens in the bedrooms - so you can't leave the windows open at night. But the AC worked really well. On the other hand, the entire front of the main bedroom is glass, and the sliding door telescopes in 3 sections to reveal the pool, forest, and Pacific Ocean far below. 2) We had NO trouble with bugs, even with the lights on and the 4-panel living room slider open in the evening. We were there in March - flying insects might be more of an issue earlier in the season. I don't think any of us got a mosquito bite the entire time. A hummingbird flew into the main bedroom, but we managed to usher it back out. 3) The walled outdoor showers are truly outdoors, and there can be some privacy issues through certain sight lines. We blocked those with towels or paper taped on windows. There is hot water, ya just gotta wait a little for the on-demand system to deliver it. Admittedly, the outdoor showers were refreshing and kinda relaxing and natural, but took some getting used to. The view from the rooftop yoga hut, and the patios is astounding, all the way around. And we saw lots of wildlife, rather close-up. A troop of Howlers came through one day, for an hour-long exhibition. Birding was good: Trogans, Mot-Mots, Cuckoos, Kiskadees, Huffman's and Lineated woodpeckers, warblers, euphonia, hawks... Toads and frogs visited the pool in the evening. We saw a Coati, too. We had a great, relaxing time. We would certainly come back to Casa Candelitas. Louise was great - very friendly and helpful. Deanne is very responsive. Samara is a wonderful, cozy, comfortable town, lots of Vegan options. Don't miss Playa Carillo, a shaded swimming beach.. ##### Donald H. We keep coming back to this piece of paradise : the views, the nature sounds, sunsets and sunrises, the pool, and the artistic atmosphere of this unique villa - are all just perfect for us. The drive to town on a 4x4 is about 13 minutes but it's worth it to get away from all the noise and other crowded neighborhoods. Seen much wild life around the house - birds, monkeys, exotic butterflies, iguanas, and more... Samara in general is a top choice for Costa Rica travelers. Great restaurants and vibe and exotic beaches. Super warm ocean with a safe sandy bottom. Large variety of activities available for families and adventurers alike. And Deanne is a great host. We enjoyed the peace and quiet (other than all the birds and monkeys) and cooling off in the great pool in the afternoons. The house is well designed with large sliding doors that open directly to the pool, and some beautiful art installations. Highly recommended ##### Greg H. Stayed 5 nights in Apr 2022
