In the heart of Phuket Town’s old town district, visit Wat Mongkol Nimit. With its gold leaf roof and white pillars, the 19th-century temple stands out due to its ornate design and décor. Enter through the extravagant gate draped in gold carvings and begin to explore this intriguing compound.
In the courtyard by the entrance, you’ll likely see resident monks going about their duties. See how they study at the religious school building of Sino-Portuguese design located within the complex.
Visit the impressive shrine hall at the center of the temple and let your eyes acclimatize to the shiny gold symbols and statues decorating its façade and gabled roof. Blue and red frames complement the gold color scheme.
As you make your way inside, admire the gold statue and red framed doors accessed by sets of steps. In the hall, an impressive gold sculpture of Buddha takes pride of place.
Continue making your way around the complex and admire the pointed chedi tower that resembles an upturned bell. Practicing Buddhists come to meditate in its serene interior, which is decorated with holy relics and statues.
The temple opens daily from early morning until late afternoon and is free to enter. Make sure you’re appropriately dressed for a religious building wear garments covering the knees and shoulders.
Wat Mongkol Nimit is found in Old Phuket Town, in the southeastern corner of Phuket Island. Drive east from Patong Beach for 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) to reach the site in about half an hour. You can also arrive at Phuket Bus Terminal 1 and walk here within 15 minutes. While in the area, stop off at surrounding attractions like the Phuket Trickeye Museum, the Hai Leng Ong Statue and Chinpracha House.
