Spring Skiing

Get one last taste of winter

While winter gets most of the hype when it comes to skiing and snowboarding, there are some spots around the country where you can still run down the slopes during the spring months. If you happened to miss peak season this year—or simply want to extend your fun for a few more months—these spots are for you.

1. Breckenridge, Colorado
Located about two hours from the Denver airport, Breckenridge is one of Colorado’s top ski resort towns in both winter and spring. The resort remains open until mid- to late-April, allowing skiers to enjoy warm sunshine while heading down the slopes. Some outdoor enthusiasts even claim that the snow in Colorado is best during March and April, so consider that just one more reason to plan a visit.

2. Mammoth Mountain, California
Thanks to its high elevation and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Mammoth Mountain receives an abundance of moisture-rich snowfall well into April and May. Aside from seasonal benefits like warmer days and extended sunlight hours, you will find far fewer crowds here in spring than you will during summer.

3. Snowbird, Utah
Snowbird has the highest elevation of all the ski resorts in Utah, meaning it receives fresh snowfall longer than anywhere else in the state. The entire resort is open during the month of April (conditions permitting), with several slopes remaining open through the end of May. Even if you’re not a huge fan of winter sports, the resort is also great this time of year for hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.

You can also catch other activities during the cusp season, like hiking and biking, outdoor dining, and scenic gondola rides.
