    Pocket Guide: Myanmar

After nearly a century of self-imposed political isolation, Myanmar is opening to the world again in a big way. This is great news for travelers who love Southeast Asia. Myanmar, also known as Burma, has some of the most beautiful Buddhist temples and ancient palaces in that part of the world. Many parts of the country seem hardly to have changed since the days of the British Raj.

Book Myanmar hotel packages that will allow you to visit a variety of different places like Yangon, Mandalay, and Bagan. Expedia can help stretch your tourist dollar farther by guiding you to the best Myanmar hotels where you can make reservations for rooms at special discount rates.

Although Yangon, also called Rangoon, is no longer Myanmar's capital, it is still the country's economic and cultural center. The 2,500 year old Shwedagon Pagoda is a huge golden dome that dominates the city and is still in use today as a place of Buddhist prayer and meditation. Visit at dawn or sunset when the angle of the sun's rays illuminate its beauty. Tour the enormous Bogyoke Market for the best deals on silver and gold jewelry and local handicrafts like the traditional sarongs locals wear to temple. Yangon offers many affordable Myanmar hotel deals near the pagoda and the market.

In the 13th century, Marco Polo described Bagan as the golden city alive with tinkling bells. In his day, this 30-square mile plain in the center of Myanmar on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River was home to over 13,000 temples and stupas. Today, approximately 2,500 of them remain. Although many of them are in disrepair, they still remain sacred places and often provide a picturesque sight early in the morning as the river mists rise around them. Central Myanmar can be a challenging place to find hotels in Myanmar, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and book your reservations before you get there.

Mandalay retains much of the charm it had in British colonial days, and travelers can find cheap hotel deals in Myanmar in the vibrant city. Take a trip along the Dokehtawaddy River into the nearby Shan hills and visit the villages of Hsipaw, Pyin Oo Lwin, and Kyauk Me to get an authentic glimpse of what Burmese life was like before British colonization. Mandalay is one of the top places to locate a cheap Myanmar hotel deal you can use as a base from which to explore the surrounding countryside.

I am a regular visitor in Yangon and have stayed at mist of the major hotels. This one is consistently excellent. It's 'edge of town' lakeside location is a big plus in these days of terrible traffic.

Hotel is very close to the Ruby Mart supermarket, also easy walking to Sule Pagoda and the Bogyoke Aung San market. Felt the hotel was a bit overpriced (but everything seems overpriced in Myanmar), but it was comfortable.Wifi was free, but not totally reliable. Liked the restaurant on the 14th floor with superb views of downtown Yangon. Staff was very helpful, especially the doormen. One problem we had was with the safe in the room, it was locked when we arrived, and the hotel, rather than open the safe (which was well secured to the closet), they brought a new safe, which wasn't secured to anything. We didn't use the safe, kinda defeats the object of it all, when you put all your valuables in a safe that any would-be robber can just take the safe.

"Well managed hotel in a good location."
Central location across from palace moat. Despite being in Myanmar, hotel meets international standards for a first class hotel. Rooms and public spaces well maintained and attractive. Mix of individual travelers and tour groups. Front desk staff attentive with usual Myanmar eccentricity about clean dollar bills. Excellent buffet breakfast. WiFi connects well to router in room; connection onward to internet dodgy as it is everywhere in country. Better at 4:00 am when competing traffic is low.

    Archeological Zone, Bagan - Map
From the moment we parked at the curb we knew we had walked into paradise. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the Irrawaddy River in the background is magical. Our group had two rooms, one with a garden view and one with river. Each had a porch with comfortable lounges to unwind after visiting 1000s of nearby Buddhist temples. The rooms were large, comfortable, and had all the amenities. The breakfast buffet was yummy, the spa facilities were lovely, and the location is in the heart of the archaeological zone. We walked home from Old Bagan after dinner and the staff arranged for us to rent e-bicycles to ride around the temple zone--very fun.

Great place to stay and relax. Wish if we had stayed more nights. The rooms we stayed in was very spacious and had a good bathroom and a comfortable bed. The hotel staff was very helpful in arranging taxis to/from airport and horse cart rides to see the temples. Had a reasonably good food offering too.
