friendly and classy

We had a great stay at The Heathman. It is well-located and convienient to the light rail. The room was not large but was well-appointed and designed so it felt larger. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The public areas are pretty cool and the restarant is highly rated. We would stay there again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The Japenese Gardens, Rose Gardens and the Arboretum are fabulous. You can take the light rail for free from downtown. Wear comfortable shoes and take a trail through the arboretum from the light rail station to the Gardens for a walk through an enchanted forest. Great views of the city too.

Excellent service

I enjoyed my stay. The service in both the hotel and restaurant was excellent, always attentive, but never fawning. I will return when I’m next in Portland.

Portland’s Best Hotel

An excellent hotel in an ideal location, walking distance to all the major Portland attractions. The service was superb, the staff was very helpful in suggesting good restaurants and making other suggestions for museum shows, art galleries, interesting walks and boating excursions. The room,a suite was spacious and quiet; the bed terrific. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Contemporary, well located, and customer oriented- The Heathman

Located in the heart of downtown Portland...in the theater district. Next door to the symphony,a few blocks from shopping, within walking distance of the water, close to lots of restaurants. Excellent service, friendly staff. Fantastic restaurant. Wonderful bar with music in evenings.

Traveler's tip

Check room size. Eventho we had deluxe standard, we found the room small and the bathroom tiny, tho well appointed. Don’t take a corner room.

Wonderful Trip

The Heathman is a eautiful, historic hotel in the middle of Portland’s downtown so it is close to much of the city’s attractions. We were within a short walk to the Farmers Market and Pioneer Square. My family enjoyed riding the trolley to the Saturday Market, the Bijou Cafe, Voodoo Doughnuts, and Powell’s Bookstore. We had a great time.

Fantastic Service, Great Location

First, the location of the Heathman is within easy walking distance to many major Portland attractions. It is right next door to the famous Portland sign at the Schnitzer Concert Hall, plus close to excellent shopping and dining options. We walked to Powell Bookstore as well as the Saturday Market and Voo Doo Doughnut. It never felt unsafe walking downtown. Second, the hotel service was outstanding. The hotel staff greeted us by name and were so helpful and courteous. After checking into our room, we noticed the room smelled of cigarette smoke (we had requested a non-smoking room). I called the front desk and they immediately sent someone to "ionize" our room, which worked pretty well. By the next day, the smell was gone. The room was clean, modern, and conveniently had two sinks. The L’Occitane complimentary toiletries were a nice touch, too. Valet parking was quick and easy, and literally took less than 5 minutes to get our car. Can’t say enough about how friendly the hotel staff were. It made our experience that much better. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Traveler's tip on dining

Just up the road from The Heathman is Higgins Restaurant. Their specialty is Pacific Northwest Cuisine and the food is delicious, although slightly upscale and pricey. The food is fantastic, though, with portions large enough to split. Also, on the walk to Higgins, you pass by the Oregon History Museum, which we didn’t visit, but stopped by their gift shop. It is excellent for local Oregon/Pacific Northwest souvenirs.

One of Portland’s Best

Excellent hotel conveniently located in downtown Portland. Rooms are quiet and beautifully furnished, and bed is most comfortable. Only pecularities are the very small bathroom sink, and the small space between the bed and armoire. Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful.

Traveler's tip on dining

The hotel restaurant is absolutely the best in Portland -- don’t miss it.

Had a great time.

The Heathman is in an excellent location for touring and shopping in downtown Portland. Hotel staff were excellent. We appreciated little touches like evening turndown and the use of hotel umbrellas on a rainy day. Our room was small but well organized.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

The room rate on Expedia which included free parking and a $24 a day credit toward breakfast is a very good deal.

Best of the best

Had an amazing stay. Room was lovely. Staff was kind and friendly. Car had to be valet parked off site but they got it back quickly when I needed to use it. I loved every minute of my stay. Terrific tea service and coffee in the room. Had a set up for easy use for my laptop. Bed very comfortable. Would go back in a minute! Even arranged a massage in room next door since mine was too small for a table. I started getting the flu on my second night there and they offered to get medicine if I needed it. Excellent food in the restaurant. Four star.

Good things come in small packages

At first, I must admit the room is rather small. Just for myself on business though, it was the best. All of the furnishings were absolutely top quality and the bed was amazing. Not to mention the freshly ground Peet’s coffee and a french press in the room. All other hotel coffees now taste like dirt.

Great, comfortable hotel!

We loved our stay and are extremely glad that we are returning for another stay in two weeks. The doormen and concierges were incredible. Our room with a queen bed was extremely comfortable. The soft flourescent light behind the bathroom mirror made a great night light so there was no stumbling around in the darkness in a strange room or blinded by having to turn on a room light. Highly recommend!

Unfriendly and DEFINITELY not 4 stars!!!!

Here’s the download: - Front desk, particularly the concierge, is completely unhelpful and unfriendly. They don’t know their way around the city, they don’t know the sights, they can’t get you around or make any good recommendations. They led us completely astray re: transportation -- we got two hours lost getting to the International Rose Test garden because of their poor recommendations. -- If you ask for two beds instead of one, you will have to pay $25 a night for it (w/taxes) and they will be VERY rude about it, too! Even visiting at off-peak times!! -- They did NOT clean our room until the late afternoon. We asked them to clean it, went for the mediocre afternoon tea, and then came back to our room and it was not cleaned yet! -- The fitness "room" is a joke. -- They do NOT ask you what kind of bed you’d like - and they do NOT inform you about the events that are going on in the hotel - we had to look it up in a local ’zine! -- The only good thing is the Peet’s tea that they give you with a hot water kettle (plug-in) -- this was the only nice touch! -- Again, the female concierge with reddish brown hair is EXTREMELY rude and unfriendly.

Very impressive service!

From the moment we arrived we were treated like VIP’s at this hotel. The room was clean and tastefully furnished. Room service was great. The Heathman Restaurant has a great happy hour with small plates at a very reasonable price. Everything was top-notch, and I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Portland.
