Well positioned and good location

This end of Broadway is not too busy although still ideally located only 50 metres from the great shops and restaurants of Polk St. We were given a good room at the back of the Castle Inn although it only has a narrow exposure to Broadway so street noise is minimised. Free undercover parking was also a big plus for us however SF buses are handy on both Polk and Van Ness streets. Free WiFi is also appreciated.

Grant St for the Chinese discount stores Union Square for the upmarket shops Westfield shopping centre on Market & 5th is a good mix of sops including Bloomingdales.

SF Castle Inn

Our room was OK, but the fan was not working in the bathroom. Parking was free and very tight in the lower level, but the upper level was somewhat better. We found it much easier to use public transportion and very cheap for seniors. Hotel desk clerk was helpful with instructions on how to get to city attractions by bus.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Public transportation from this location was very easy with near by bus spots. It saved a lot of walking steep hills for seniors. Senior rate only .75 per ride and transfer allows you to ride any bus, even returning in same directions, for the hour or so indicated by the transfer.

Very good value for money

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. We took only one room with two queen size beds to save money. The room was small but it was enough for us because we spent the most of the time outside. The mainly criteria for us was the location and the cleanness. The location of this hotel is great: you are at about 20min by walking of the ocean (fisherman’s wharf). The staff is friendly: the first day they gave us maps and explained to us what to visit and where not to go. There is a small breakfast which is offered each morning. It is not very big but there is enough to eat something before visiting (cereals pieces, coffee, yogurts). In our case we completed the breakfast with pastry (you can find them just at the corner and they are very good). To sum up on the hotel: positiv: Great location, safe area, staff very friendly, room very clean (they change the towels every day and the sheets if you want), free parking (a very good point when you see the prices of the parking in San Francisco), small breakfast, free internet negativ: small room for 4 people (but enough for 2), the weather was very hot so the little windows were not enough to get some cold air during the night and if you open the window there is some noise in the street, the stuff were old (the decorating, the bathroom), the bathroom is very small and there is no air way so it is very hot in it after the shower. The only big negativ point for us was the heat in the room. we needed to open the door to have some cold air.

We completed the breakfast with pastry (you can find them just at the corner and they are very good).

I searched for a hotel in San Francisco with free parking, internet, a/c, and continental breakfast. The continental breakfast was not worth it. There are better value hotels with no breakfast in the same price range.

Almost not okay

Location is not everything. Okay I admit that their location is so good but at the end of the day it is a motel you are going to stay. Try hotels little outside of the SF which is cheap, neat and clean.

Good Deal

We had a very enjoyable stay. The manager was very friendly an extremely helpful. The hotel is in a great location, busses to Fisherman’s Wharf or downtown right out the door. Lots of good, reasonable priced places to eat within a block. Price of the room very reasonable. Even continental breakfast in the morning. Would stay there again

Ideal for the Budget Traveler

As a San Francisco resident of 25 years, I had the occasion to stay at the Castle Inn for a few days. As a budget-minded person, I found it to be the ideal resting spot. It exceeded my expectations for overall comfort, cleanliness and what any one would expect upon entering the premises and their room. In addition, the location is wonderful. There are great restaurants from everywhere in the world just around the corner. I highly recommend the Castle Inn.

Be sure to visit Bob’s Donuts for the best you’ll ever have. It’s just up the street on Polk. At midnight, they’re warm! Also Victor’s Pizza on Polk is great, as is Pancho’s for Mexican.

Best location in San Francisco

This hotel was great. It was exactly the experience explained in previous reviews. The customer service was excellent. The area of the hotel was quiet and safe. My wife and I felt very comfortable walking around the location at night. The parking was a little tight and limited but secure with cameras all over the garage which gave us that extra comfort our car was safe. When we arrived the clerk was very nice and informative with showing us where to go in town so that we may have a more enjoyable trip. Overall our experience was excellent. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is wishing to have an enjoyable trip to San Francisco.

There is a Walgreens a block away that is open 24hrs and nice little pizza place that is open late across from walgreens.

Good location

Besides the friendly staff, clean rooms, good location, our beds were very comfortable. I decided to stay an extra night with my family on a very comfortable portable bed. We had all the amenities we needed. Staff very imformed of city directions. Playground for small children closeby was asset. Only neg. I can think of is that it is a smaller motel, not fancy. But great for travelers who want to stay in town.

The hotel is in a good situation - felt very safe going out at night, and hotel is close to bus routes. Staff were extremely helpful and full of good advice!

Comfortable, Clean, Quiet

Castle Inn is just off Van Ness, a major thoroughfare which doubles as part of Highway 101. Still, it’s a calm neighborhood. The room was clean and spacious. The service was efficient. Free parking was especially welcome in this city, as was the continental breakfast. Climate control was adequate during the cold nights. All in all, it was good value for the price.

Good Solution

It is a budget hotel but with key advantages like FREE parking and FREE wireless internet. Staff was very nice and gave us good suggestion. Polk St is good for easy fun at night: restaurants, pubs and the "Rouge" club are at walking distance. Public transportation is close in Van Ness. I will look for availability on my next time in The City.

Beer budget hotel in Champange Neighborhood

The Castle Inn is located in Russian Hill, which is un-touristy and full of great restaurants, shops and bars. The hotel is a low priced option, clean, but not fancy, can be loud, and the breakfast is pretty grim. The staff is nice and there is free parking.

A straight ride from the airport (Highway 101). 10 blocks from Chinatown and Pier 39 (i.e. a 10-15 minute bus ride) Highly recommended.

Convenient to Wharf area. Bus NO. 47 takes you to the wharf area from the corner of hotel.

Location was good, room was clean, otherwise nothing speical.

On the positive side... good location, clean room, parking was free. Overall it was a fair value for the money. However, the room was small and plain, no pay per view movies, and the "continental breakfast" was a joke... prepackaged pastry and instant coffee. Strictly a place to sleep in a fun neighborhood.

A great value in San Francisco

As other reviewers have said, this motel is a great value. The rooms are a little bit dated, but 100% clean and everything worked just fine. Parking is tight, but certainly manageable. The office staff go out of their way to be of assistance. I arrived early and my room was not ready, but they let me park the car anyway so I could explore the neighborhood and get some lunch. By the time I returned, my room was ready for me.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Park the car & take the bus! The San Francisco transit system is easy to use and gets you anywhere in town with ease. A couple of bus stops for tourist attractions are within 1/2 block of the hotel and make it really easy to get to Fisherman’s Wharf, etc.

Nice spot

The hotel is centrally located in the Pacific Heights area. The proprietors are friendly, helpful, and courteous. The room is clean and the bed very comfortable.

Good hotel -- good location

Have spent a lot of time in the SF Bay area, however, this is the first stay at Castle Inn. I found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. The room was neat and clean. Free covered parking is on-site. But beware, spots and driveways (one to upper lot and one to basement parking) are narrow. Neither level provides much room to maneuver. I had a mini-van so parking and leaving were a challenge, but don’t let the parking scare you off. Facility, location and price were worth it. It seems most guests left their vehicles at the hotel during the day and either walked, took a cab or public transportation.

Well worth the price

Parking is a little tight but because of the location of this hotel, we pretty much either walk or take the public transportation. The lady at the front desk was very friendly, informative and helpful (thank you!). This hotel is great for both families and businessperson. Free parking, breakfast and location are definitely a plus.

The buses are $1.50 each. There were 5 of us so most of the time we took a cab because distances to the attractions we were interested in (Fisher’s Wharf, Chinatown, Golden Gate bridge etc.) are within a $10 cab ride.
