"Amazing stay at Shimaya. The owners, as mentioned in other reviews are outstanding. Gave us a ride to the Snow Monkeys and were very helpful. The breakfast (¥700) was simple and quick - toast, fruit, yoghurt, coffee and juice! Onsen was clean and great. We were on the fourth floor and the views were unreal. Will for sure be returning in the winter! "

This may not be an issue for most people, but I read a misleading review which made me book this property thinking there were private showers and that is NOT the case. "Our stay started off well with a shuttle pick up from the station. The traditional look and style of the Yorozuya is beautiful. My husband and I booked the private spa for 2 hours our first night and it only cost $100 for us both to use. The private spa was absolutely amazing and even though it was modern compared to everything else, I loved that it was a private all inclusive experience that my husband and I could enjoy the baths and sauna together at our leisure. "A lovely cosey place to stay if you are visiting the Snow Monkey Park. We walked from the ryokan to the park, it took about 30 minutes to the gate and I am a slow walker. A nice town to wander around if you have the time. "

"Amazing experience staying at this ryokan. Upon arrival they had our name on a piece of paper posted in the front window of the hotel which was helpful to identify that we were in the right spot. Room was large. Staff was Super nice speaking english and answering all our questions. Breakfast was AMAZING! We wish we had also done dinner. Right in the middle of all the hot springs which was fantastic."

"A fantastic traditional ryokan within steps of the Zenkoji Temple. The owners and staff were delightful and we felt as though we were living in a family home. We stayed in room 16 on half board and are so glad we did. There are plenty of places to eat in the area but the food we were served in the ryokan were as good as anything we ate in 3 weeks in Japan. Nagano is a lovely town and a welcome change from Tokyo. Don’t forget to visit the Snow Monkeys - the highlight of our trip. "
