“My traveling pal and I had the entire lodge to ourselves. We loved the property. Sadly we did not bring anything to eat and all the vendors were closed before we arrived. “Great place to stay. Room was very spacious (esp. after dogbox in Auckland) clean and tidy. OK, it is not new, but everything was in working order and full stove, fridge and microwave, plus plenty of utensils, made cooking easy. They also have a small, but adequate, gym on site. We had to hole up here during Cyclone Gabrielle and it was fine for the three nights we stayed. Staff and owners were very helpful and chatty. Bonus was being able to watch T20 Womens World Cup on TV!”

Matapouri beach is a long stretch of sand with clear turquoise water. Walk along the beach to the end then into the water to walk around a rocky outcropping to reach the last bit of beach. From there it’s a 20 minute walk up and over a hill to reach the Mermaid Pools. Deep blue tide pools that you can swim in, worth the extra work to get there.
