Close to the center of Athens, this historic neighborhood is filled with trendy restaurants, leafy streets and exciting cultural attractions.

With a pedestrianized street and views of the Acropolis, it’s not surprising that Thiseio is one of the most popular districts in Athens. Stroll along the tree-lined streets to find atmospheric restaurants and fascinating museums.

Visit the Herakleidon Museum to discover everything from fine arts to replicas of ancient machines and educational children’s programs. A highlight is the Antikythera mechanism, a fully functional model of one of the world’s oldest analog computers. Check the website for revolving exhibitions throughout the year.

Wander down Apostolou Pavlou Street and the pedestrian-only Herakleidon Streetto find the neighborhood’s notable shopping, dining and nightlife venues. From typical Greek restaurants to cocktail bars, you’ll have options to suit every mood. Plus, see fantastic views of the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora of Athens.

Inside the Ancient Agora Museum, discover collections of items unearthed during the excavation of the site, where the original building was built in the 2nd century BC. See the 11th-century Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles, along with the majestic Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos at the ancient site.

Set aside time to walk up Pnyx Hill. Stop partway at the National Observatory of Athens, the oldest research center in Greece and the spot where the Doridis telescope was installed in 1902. On top of Pnyx Hill, a very early site of democracy, get your camera ready for memorable city views.

The nearby neighborhood of Monastiraki features Avissinias Square. Here, shop for trinkets and old treasures at flea markets to the sounds of live music on the weekend. When night falls, the action doesn’t stop, with stalls still open and lively restaurants and bars filled with fun-loving locals and tourists.

Fly to Athens International Airport for a 30-minute drive to Thiseio. Most attractions are easy to access on foot and are close to area hotels. To explore farther afield, use the city’s metro, taxis and hop-on, hop-off buses.

Makrigianni
The architecture next to the acropolis is insane. Built on the side of the hill, it's a fun lil exercise to see them. It is said these houses are reminiscent of those in the islands because islanders who migrated missed their old homes so much. Either way, if you don't have time to visit the islands, you can get a small taste here! #architecture #athens #greece #citystreets
