Question 11

Can I drive in El Portal with my current driver's license?

Accepted Answer

If you don't have a driver's license issued in Dominican Republic, then you might need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be able to rent a car. You should also note that if you do need an IDP, it won't be valid on its own. You'll need to show your current driver's license your passport and other forms of identification as well. Lastly, it's important that the credit card used to book the rental matches the name on your license and passport. Some additional requirements for international car rentals are:

Age restrictions: You'll need to be at least 25 in most countries to rent a car. If you're younger, it may still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to what kinds of cars you can rent.
Driving limitations: Make sure you read the fine print before you drive off the lot. You typically can't cross country borders, drive onto ferries or go off-roading with a rental car.
