Cascade Falls

Frothy cascades crash through several tiers of an immense waterfall near a meadow of elk and moose at the end of a popular nature trail.

Visit Cascade Falls, a glorious waterfall adorning a 7-mile (11-kilometer) trail in the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park. The trail meanders between tall evergreen trees on its way to the impressive set of cascades. Follow the trail to the waterfall to see this natural treasure from below.

Climb up the rocks for another angle of the falls, which are even more beautiful from above. Clamber on top of the boulders to find the best observation points. Wear appropriate footwear and take care not to slip on the wet surfaces.

The scenic surroundings by the falls are idyllic for picnicking with your family. Take a photo of your kids in front of the waterfall, which consists of a chute rushing over several tiers. As the water crashes down on each layer, it creates a flurry of bubbling foam.

Go horseback riding along a parallel road that branches off from the main trail. Stroll through the waterfall’s neighboring lush meadow, where you might spot elk and moose, especially in the early morning or near dusk. Bring sufficient water for your trip, as well as insect spray to ward off mosquitoes.

Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds on the popular trail. Even beginner trekkers can navigate the easy path. Visiting is best from June through August, before winter snow covers the terrain, lasting through the spring.

Cascade Falls is on the edge of Grand Lake, on the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Use the town as a base and drive northeast for a few minutes, continuing along a dirt road to reach the beginning of the North Inlet Trailhead. Drop off your car in the parking lot next to the road.

While you’re in the park, look for nearby rock formations such as Mt. Patterson, Snowdrift Peak and Andrews Peak.
