Monticello was the primary plantation of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, who began designing and building Monticello at age 26 after inheriting land from his father. Located just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, in the Piedmont region, the plantation was originally 5,000 acres (20 km2), with Jefferson using slaves for extensive cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops, later shifting from tobacco cultivation to wheat in response to changing markets.
Jefferson designed the main house using neoclassical design principles described by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, subsequently reworking the design through much of his presidency to include design elements popular in late 18th-century Europe and integrating numerous of his own design solutions. Situated on the summit of an 850-foot (260 m)-high peak in the Southwest Mountains south of the Rivanna Gap, the name Monticello derives from the Italian for When the world shows you it's true colors... The Rotunda Home, sweet home. My favorite place on Earth. Summer at Monticello is nice too... I would like to make a statement that I liked Hamilton before he was cool. With that being said, I appreciated visiting TJ's house. It is a octagon/ Neoclassical architectural house. One thing that caught me off guard was the wine in the region. It's amazing! I would say Napa first, then Virginia wine. #stunningstructures The Downtown Mall in Charlottesville is a pedestrian mall. It's loaded with great restaurants, quirky shops, and usually has some entertainers as well. There are even historical walking tours and ghost tours. This is one of many reasons I #lovemytown! More from Monticello's summer gardens. The President of the United States and the President of France visited this historic landmark on Tuesday February 11, 2014. #blue The perfect bite: salty #pork belly, sweet apple, creamy parsnip purée, and delicate butter lettuce. And that's how @thealleylight, @beardfoundation semifinalist, blew me away last night. Washed it all down with an incredible sidecar (or two). HINT: Alley Light has no sign -- just a pretty lantern hanging above an unobtrusive doorway. But the speakeasy feel is part of the charm! Pricy but incredible French tapas. #Patterns #LifeAtExpedia - Historic downtown Charlottesville Can't wait for Spring again! Monticello is a historic and #colorful day-trip. Monticello's summer gardens. Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville is well worth a visit. Architecture and history buffs will be enthralled, but so will everyone else. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable - I've been here at least four times and learn something new every time.
The guided tour takes you through the first floor of the house, which Jefferson designed himself. After that, you are free to explore the rest of the grounds yourself. Take your time walking around underneath the house where the kitchen and other dependencies are located, the working gardens, and the view of surrounding Charlottesville. Just finishing dinner at the Ivy Inn in Charlottesville,VA. Forget that William Faulkner once lived here when it had lodging. Today it is a restaurant and every aspect of the meal was amazing. The service was outstanding an thy even have a great wine and bar selection. A little out of the way but WOW so worth it. - Absolutely breathtaking and a wonderful way to take a break from the heat. In DC, at least recently, summers are hot, muggy, and inching towards 120 on a daily basis. But Monticello is set in a higher elevation and the temperature was a lot less miserable than in the lower lying lands. I wore a skirt and t-shirt and was comfortable while in DC I would have been roasting. It gave for beautiful views and I can't wait to return one day to see it during the fall.
