Durras North is just 20 minutes north of Batemans Bay by car, but has a completely different look and feel because of its lakeside setting in Murramarang National Park. Swim or fish in the lake, play on the beach or go bush walking from this small community overlooking Batemans Bay.
Take your pick from Durras Beach or Pebbly Beach, or visit both, to enjoy the seaside. Drive to the nearby Depot Beach and its headland for a change of scenery. There is a campsite here too and you can purchase ice, firewood and gas bottles.
Head to Durras Lake to swim safely with the kids, away from the crashing waves and marine creatures. The freshwater lake warms up nicely in summer and its shores are a great place for a picnic.
The Durras Lake North and Joalah Holiday Parks in Durras North are great for those who love the Australian bush. You can pitch your tent or rent a cabin or cottage for a little more comfort.
Nearby Durras is the nearest small town. It has some shops, an RV park and basic facilities. Join a sea kayaking tour from here to see more of Batemans Bay.
The suburb of South Durras also has an RV park. Go swimming or snorkeling at Cookies Beach across the creek and visit Wobbegong Bay, named after the odd-looking, docile sharks that love to rest under the rocks in its shallow waters.
Traveling farther south you’ll reach Wasp Head, the headland that looks out over nearby Wasp Island. Beyond this point are the deserted beaches and forests of Murramarang National Park.
The Durras area attracts many city dwellers from Canberra, Australia’s capital city, because it has the nearest beach with secluded camping spots, apart from busier Batemans Bay. Canberra is just over 2 hours away by car along the Kings Highway. Nowra is the closest commercial town to Durras North, but its shops and hotels are still 1.5 hours away to the north by car.
