Visit the Fleurieu Peninsula to sample an exquisite mix of South Australia’s attractions. Relax in Goolwa, enjoying the good food and Cittaslow (slow living) events of this riverfront town. Historic buildings, the Fleurieu Distillery and a charming wharf and markets add to the town’s appeal.
Victor Harbor is another lovely settlement on the southeastern side of the peninsula, with widely varying activities. Ride the tram to Granite Island, an unusual passage because a large Clydesdale horse pulls the historic double-decker Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram across a narrow causeway. Explore the granite shoreline with breaking waves and look for unusual public art along the Kaiki Trail circling the island.
Back on the mainland, pay respects to fallen military members at the Soldiers Memorial Gardens, where majestic Norfolk Island pines commemorate their contributions. Admire ocean views as you hike the Victor Harbor Heritage Trail. You might even spot migrating whales between May and October. Pet kangaroos, koalas and emus at Urimbirra Wildlife Park.
Continue southwest along the coast for the surfing sites of Waitpinga Beach and Parsons Beach. Large waves, soft sands and refreshing breezes make these areas outstanding spots to watch experienced surfers catch rolling waves for long rides. Reach the peninsula’s end at Cape Jervis and take a ferry across to Kangaroo Island, with beaches, wildlife and good food and wine.
Drive from Adelaide to the Fleurieu Peninsula in a little more than 1 hour. Be sure to stop in the McLaren Vale region’s numerous wineries as you travel south. From the Jesuit roots within the old stone winery of Sevenhill Cellars to the ultra modern tasting room inside the d’Arenberg Cube, you’ll find unique settings to match the exceptional tastes of regional wines, such as shiraz, grenache, tempranillo and sangiovese.
