a castle under the stars

picture a star-spangled sky, a 13th century palazzo, lots and lots of space on a hilltop, the sounds of wildlife and not much else that could disturb the silence. And that would only begin to describe the feeling of welcome and freedom you experience at the Palazzo Scagliae. The hosts are gemstones, they give you all the tips to make the best of your stay. Gubbio, the Apennine mountains, Perugia, Assisi, the Marche region, centers of truffle and cashmere...all there. Hope to come back soon and explore more of the region.

Can I give this property and experience 100 stars?

On this vacation we stayed in Rome, Gubbio, Florence, Venice and Interlaken. After we finished our trip, our whole family said the highlight of the trip by far was staying here. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars isn't enough. We're giving them 100 stars! My wife had the idea to stay in a castle and this property was perfect. We had the entire place to ourselves. We met the owners, (a husband and wife) when we arrived and they were an absolute joy! The husband spent 40 years restoring the castle and he had so much pride showing us around and telling us the history, it was magical. The wife was the most kind, sweet and funny person. The dynamic between the two of them was great to watch. We arrived at 8pm and asked them for a restaurant recommendation. We ended up having dinner with them at a restaurant in downtown Gubbio and got to know them even better. The husband owns an antique shop in town that is a must visit! Talk with him about the history of his items and the shop itself. This couple made our trip the most special occasion!! Thank you! OK, let's get to the castle. OMG!! The location is on a mountain top with great views and sunsets. There are meadows, hills, a nun convent across the hills, frogs and just quiet nature everywhere. The castle itself is stunning! A medieval treasure expertly restored, with a modern amenities. The beds were very comfortable, the showers had great water pressure and were hot. Did I mention you're staying in a castle!!!

Castle with a view

We had an amazing time staying at Palazzo Scagliae! The castle is more beautiful than the pictures do it justice! Andreina and her husband are extremely nice and helpful, they waited up till our group arrived past 11 at night to give us a tour and make sure we were settled in. We had a group of 5 of us and enjoyed hanging around the nature and hot tub near the castle and going into Gubbio. Gubbio is a great medieval town with an operating amphitheater (which we watched a rock concert at) city walls a castle and a couple churches/cathedrals which were all a lot of fun to explore. Couldn’t recommend this location more if you are searching for a large home or castle for a group of friends or any sort of gathering

Paradise and splendor in Pisciano!!

Staying at the Palazzo Scagliae was easily the most incredible experience we have ever had at any rental property. The pictures posted in the description and words do not do it justice . It is a stunning and magnificent space, dripping with history- one can almost hear the walls and doors talking to you. The property and views are breathtaking. There is more room and space than you can imagine. Andreina and her husband are the most responsive and lovely hosts we have ever encountered. They treated us at the Palazzo with hugs like we were family. We had friends visit from Slovakia with their two young children- no problem. They made sure there were appropriate accommodations for little ones .we asked about umbrellas and covered spaces outside- done. We asked about using the pizza oven- done ( wood and kindling and equipment is already there). Nothing was too big of an ask. Gubbio is a delightful medieval town and just a 15-20 minute drive and is beautiful. Roman amphitheater, beautiful plazas, great food and shopping, and even a dinosaur museum made from and old monastery! I know we will be back and we also have made friends for life.

Vacanza meravigliosa in un oasi di pace

La location è semplicemente meravigliosa, sembra quasi di essere tornati al passato immersi in un'oasi di pace e serenità. Il maniero è semplicemente stupendo, ben curato e dotato di tutti i confort. I proprietari, persone squisite, ci hanno accolto al ns arrivo e sono sempre rimasti disponibili per ogni necessità.

Magnificent stay in a Castle!

We were a family with 2 adults, 2 grandparents and 2 kids, 9 & 7 and stayed 3 nights. Upon arriving to the castle we were blown away! The grounds are maintained beautifully and the castle restoration is done beautifully as well. My boys loved running around outside, enjoyed going into the cold dip large Jacuzzi, and loved navigating inside the house. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you might need. We BBQ'd outside (brought our own charcoal, lighter and lighter cubes and used the outside pizza oven! We spent all our nights lounging outside and enjoying the ambiance. There are a lot of mosquitoes during the summer months so don't forget your spray! To my surprise we didn't turn the t.v. on once but the family room does look very cozy. The local grocery stores are about a 15 minute drive and the city center of Gubbio is AMAZING! Much more so than we expected. Tons of restaurants in the town center. There are restaurant recommendations inside the castle as well as other recommendations such as a wine tasting that we went to and it was FABULOUS!! The drive was about 40/45 mins but worth it to Vineria del Carmine. We took our kids and they had pizza and soda/juice tastings and loved it as well. We would absolutely stay there again! Communicating with Andreina was so easy and she responds very quickly. My only recommendation to the owners would be to provide or have available standing fans in each of the bedrooms during the summer months to get some air flow. NOTE: there are two ways to get to the castle and initially our navigation system took us on a dirt and rocky road. We turned around and it took us on a paved road; thankfully!

wow. Wow. Wow. From the moment we arrived we were blown away with the magnificence of the Palazzo. The sheer size of it, the meticulous restoration, the comfort, the delicious meals prepared by the Amazing Giovanni to our hosts Andreina and Nello - all of it perfection. The views! sunrise and sunset. Ths Milky Way in all its glory. The sounds of the monastery bells. Wish I was still there! Thank you for letting us share in the history and glory of this place.

Una meravigliosa permanenza a Palazzo

Abbiamo passato 3 notti in questo bellissimo Palazzo medievale; un esperienza davvero unica! Il restauro fatto a regola d arte ha consentito di recuperare la suggestione di allora con tutti i confort del mondo moderno. La proprietà è molto grande, il giardino molto curato, con ampio spazio per la vita all’aperto. Finemente arredato, le stanze offrono una vista mozza fiato. Gli ospiti ci hanno accolto con un benvenuto davvero speciale. Grazie di cuore! Consigliamo vivamente!

It was a superb Villa and Holiday.

The Villa was well kept and all the rooms were clean and spacious. The dip pool was a welcome relief to the very hot weather in the region and we enjoyed that in the evenings. The overall area was excellent with great views and we all loved the history of where we were staying. Our hosts were superb and were very helpful with suggestions of places to visit and exploring the region. They were also extremely helpful as my Step Son actually proposed there near the end of our stay. We were very lucky to have a group of Musicians there who serenaded the night away and made the place very romantic. Overall, it was a superb holiday and we will remember it as just a perfect place to be.

We had the best experience of Umbria staying at the beautiful Palazzo. Thoroughly recommend it.

We were 2 families/9 people and had a wonderful 9 night stay at Palazzo Scagliae. It is just as it appears on the website. Andreina & Nello have put so much time & energy into the property & want to make sure people appreciate and enjoy it. They were very responsive to our needs which weren’t many. It is an amazing building but also very comfortable and practical. We had days where we stayed around and enjoyed the Palazzo and relaxed, but it was also a scenic drive down into Gubbio and not far from the other medieval Umbrian towns. It is a peaceful and relaxing place - the views and sunrises and sunsets are amazing. We would love to go back.

The Most Amazing Castle On The Hill

If you ever dreamed of staying in a medieval castle on the hill, you don't have to dream any longer, because .... now you can. Palazzo Scagliae is amazing and it's very difficult for the images to actually do it justice. It is even better when you see it and stay there for yourself. The owners Andreina and Nello are two of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Their passion for a project that has taken them over 35 years to bring the Palazzo to the condition it is today is evident in their enthusiasm for the building and the attention to detail in which they have restored it. They met us and took us round personally explaining everything we needed to know for a comfortable vacation and at our request even educated us on more of the history of the building and surrounding area. It is a perfect location for Gubbio and the surrounding area in your own special grounds but minutes from the main road via tarmac, not rubble as you often get in this region. Perugia airport is only 45 mins away by car. Ideal for a family, especially if you are dog lovers and missing your own pets whilst away as you are visited almost on a daily basis by the most friendliest dog you could ever wish to meet. Sometimes she comes for a stroke and sometimes for a light dog snack! but mainly just to be with you whilst you while away the hours at the Palazzo. She then wanders off back home and doesn't bother you. There are a couple of other local dogs also who visit on a regular basis in the evening but all are very friendly and great with children. The views are spectacular and the seclusion and privacy of having a castle that can sleep at least 8 is very special. It is secure with electric gates and its own private grounds. We don't really want to recommend this special place to anyone because we want to keep it for ourselves but it would be a shame for others not to enjoy the building and location. Plenty of bathrooms, beds, space inside and out, pizza oven, bbq, hot tub, the list goes on. To have the whole Palazzo to yourself is fantastic and we can only recommend it very highly. A truly magical and unforgettable experience

We arranged to meet the owners, Renno and Andreina in Mocaiana. They were very warm and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Because it was so late Renno gave us a quick introduction to the Palazzo and promised to be back at 9.00am to show us around the following day. Waking in the morning was a little surreal. Above us was a high ceiling with huge wooden beams and stone tiles and a wrought iron chandelier hung above us. There was sunlight streaming in through one of the heavy iron framed windows on to the stone floor and the sound of the birds and crickets outside along with the faint tinkle of cow-bells further down the valley was all we could hear. We had a quick breakfast and then set off to explore the castle and it’s surroundings.You could tell instantly that the restoration had been a labour of love for Renno and Andreina. The attention to detail and care is very apparent and there is a beautiful and tasteful mix of old and contemporary throughout the whole estate.The interior is simply beautiful and authentic and I personally had a sense of instant calm. The exterior of the building and the surrounding grounds are just as stunning.The grounds contain fruit trees and other large conifers, mostly the trademark Poplars that are so definitive of the Umbria and Tuscany regions. A large barbecue and huge stone pizza oven are available for parties al fresco and if things get too hot there is a good sized hot tub to cool off in.We were also adopted by Pepita (see photos), who we all fell in love with. A gentle and insanely happy dog who greeted us at the gate of the castle every time we came home. There are many beautiful places to visit in Umbria with several of the hill-top towns within an hours drive…Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia and the caves at Frasassi were breath-taking. I have many outstanding memories of our time here but one that stands out is the night there was a rather biblical thunderstorm! From our bed we could see the lightning bolts cracking through the sky and filling the night with an amazing cobalt blue light. And then the moon appeared, framed by the window. We watched as it traced an arc right in front of us, back lit by dramatic clouds and blue lightning. If you have any sense of drama, romance or fantasy or just have a desire to try something out of the ordinary…go to the Palazzo Scagliae. We will definitely be back one day very soon.

Urlaub im Paradies

Wir hatten eine wunderschöne Woche in diesem traumhaften Ferienobjekt. Wer Natur und Ruhe schätzt, gleichzeitig aber Kultur und kulinarische Genüsse liebt, ist hier absolut richtig. Die Vermieter sind reizend und sehr unkompliziert. Für uns wurden extra Utensilien für den Pizza-Ofen gekauft und vorbeigebracht! Wir empfehlen Ausflüge nach Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia und Cortona. Natürlich kann man aber auch nur einfach "zu Hause" bleiben, denn eigentlich ist es zu schön, um wegzufahren. Die Inneneinrichtung konnte nicht besser sein und wir haben uns alle sehr wohl gefühlt. The beauty, history and romance of Umbria summed up in this castle with 360 views of the Apennines.

We rented the castle at Palazzo Scagliae for its proximity to so many historic medevil towns as well as it's beauty, and it didn't disappoint. The breathtaking views surrounding the castle and the attention to detail in this historic Knight's Templar caatle amazed us at every moment of our stay. It was like going back in time to experience it first hand. Nights and morning were spent in this awe inspiring castle and days were spent exploring medevil towns like Gubio, Spello and Todi to name a few of our favorites. Nello and Andreina were gracious hosts, and if you are in Gubio I recommend stopping by Nello's antique shop to get some deeper insights into the town's history. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Impressive place

This meticulously restored stone building is simply beautiful. The view and grounds are amazingly. Inside is comfortable and very peaceful. Andreina and Nello are wonderfully friendly people, and clearly love the Palazzo. I am very happy to have enjoyed it for a week, and would love to stay here again in the future.

Step back in time

The first thing which struck us was the care taken to bring this watch tower back to its original construction. Everything in this house feels authentic and restored with care. From the original floors preserved in glass cassings to the boar head on the kitchen open pit fire you feel like this is pretty much how the tower must have looked when originally built. The owners are the ones who have undertaken this life project and it shows in how they have preserved the feel of the place but also how proud they are of the end result. The views over the surrounding area are stunning, you can pick your own breakfast fruits in the garden and the whirlpool is a welcomed addition at the end of a hot day. One additional pleasant feature is the town of Gubbio 10mins away which, like the watch tower itself, is a return to medieval times where the pace of the day slows down and you can just enjoy being surrounded by living history.

Fantastic

This was the highlight of our Italian holiday. The Palazzo has been perfectly refurbished by Nello, making it comfortable and functional. Andreina makes sure that everything is in perfect order. The location is stunning and peaceful. There is plenty of places to visit close by and Gubbio is beautiful and less crowded, with plenty to see and good restaurants. The Palazzo is a great place to get away from the summer heat, as it is about 600 meters above sea level, making for cool evenings. We also enjoyed the night sky and shooting stars after a barbecue. It was all much better than we imagined.

Amazing property - just magnificent!

We spent over seven weeks traveling through Southern Europe and the stay at this property was without a doubt the highlight of our trip. It was an amazjng overall experience! Located at the top of the mountain with 360 views of Umbria the location and the palazzo could not be more perfect. Very classy and tasteful decor, huge home, plenty of room and twelve acres of beautifully landscaped property with fig, plum and olive trees. 100% percent privacy! There's a wood burning BBQ and wood burning pizza oven and the outdoor hot tub was plenty big for our kids to endlessly enjoy themselves. Located 15 min from beautiful Gubbio and just a 90min drive to Montepulciano. The owners are great hosts who greeted us like family! They were available when we had questions but otherwise were never on the property during our stay. We will be back for sure!

Great place with a lot of history

We spent two wonderful weeks at the Palazzo Scagliae in the surroundings of Gubbio. It's a wonderful building with a lot of history, carefully rebuilt and furnished with a huge enclosed terrain. For everyone who's interested in combining being close to historic places like Gubbio, Peruggia, Assisi and others, and looking for a great place to relax a blink of an eye away from main roads an traffic. We can only recommend Palazzo Scagliae to everyone. Thanks a lot for this opportunity.

Something a bit different...

This is a magical place. We are a family with three children aged 11, 13 and 15. We absolutely loved staying here. We will come back here one day. It is every bit as beautiful as it looks. We enjoyed going in the standing up cable car in Gubbio. We have stayed in places all over the world and it has to be one of the best. If you're thinking of coming here, do it! The only negative I can think of is that the jacuzzi is cold. The highest temperature it got to was 27'. That's okay for a pool but if you're just sitting it was too cold for us.

Palazzo incantevole

Il Palazzo Scagliae offre la possibilità di vivere in un epoca storica medievale ma con tutti i comfort di cui oggi siamo abituati ad avere: elettrodomestici (non manca niente), WiFi ecc. L'arredamento è stato scelto con gusto fino ai minimi dettagli. È la seconda volta che alloggiamo nel Palazzo Scagliae. Un esperienza da ripetere ancora in una regione spettacolare come l'Umbria con un alloggio magnifico come il Palazzo Scagliae. Abbiamo trascorso una vacanza superrilassante con i nostri figli che si sono divertiti un mondo nel Jacuzzi. I padroni gentilissimi e disponibili in ogni caso. Grazie Andreina e Nello!

A fabulous stay in a unique property

We had a lovely stay at Palazzo Scagliae it was just as good if not better than the images on the website make it look. Andreina and Giovanni were lovely hosts, a friendly and fun great welcome tour, left us to our privacy but were helpful on the other end of the phone when we had a slight issue with the umbrella breaking which was resolved quickly. They were also flexible in allowing us to check out late on our last day as they didnt have guests coming in; which was much appreciated as we had a late evening flight from Rome. The Palazzo itself is a very special building, which they are rightly proud of as restoring it has been a real labour of love for them for over 30 years. They have done a lovely job of making it comfortable, without spoiling the original features - we loved it!! We really enjoyed our time at Palazzo Scagliae and would not hesitate to stay here again if we were in this part of Italy - or to recommend it to others.
