My wife and I are mostly beginner hikers and she had a knee replacement just over a year ago, so after hearing that this hike is quite steep and difficult, I was worried we couldn't make it. We booked the Hanging Lake shuttle which leaves from Glenwood Springs and takes about 20 minutes to drive the 11 miles to Hanging Lake. They allow you 3 hours to do the hike, at which time you can get a return shuttle. Well, after taking our time going up - which was even more difficult than I thought it would be - spending about 15 minutes at the spectacular Hanging Lake and Sprouting Rock Falls - we had to rush a bit to get back for our shuttle return ride. If you miss your shuttle, you can be on a wait -list for the next shuttle - which is about 45 minutes later. Some people turned around even before the half-way point - people clearly not in shape to do this hike or people with small children.
