An interior of a church with wooden pews, a large painting on the wall, and a chandelier.
A river with a bridge, a church with a tall spire, and a forested mountain in the background.
A stone sculpture of three figures in a garden setting.
Exhilarating ski slopes line the mountains in a region filled with hot springs, national parks and the religious hub of Lourdes.

Visit the Hautes-Pyrénées region to appreciate a contrast in landscapes. Dramatic mountains sweep across the border between Spain and France at the southern end, while flat agricultural land covers the department’s northern side. In this diverse terrain, hot thermal waters rise from the ground, creating towns and spa resorts around them. Hike through the gorgeous countryside to reach the various lakes and forests on this hilly topography.

Follow the pilgrims to the Marian nucleus of the world in Lourdes, where Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous in a cave 18 times. Marvel at the design of the Notre-Dame de l’Immaculée Conception, with its stunning rose window and tall, narrow spires. Visit the 19th-century Rosary Basilica for its restored mosaics and neo-byzantine design. You can even enter the Grotto of Massabielle, where the Virgin Mary apparitions are said to have taken place.

The largest city in the region is Tarbes, which has a rich industrial heritage and a role in the aeronautical industry. See the Birthplace of Marechal Foch and admire the Mairie de Tarbes and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Sede.

For a change of scenery, head out into the great outdoors. The Cirque de Gavarnie is a spectacular valley formed by glacial erosion and described by writer Victor Hugo as the Colosseum of Nature. Stroll across the Pont d’Espagne that once joined France and Spain.

Find the department in the southwestern corner of France along the Spanish border. Fly to the Toulouse-Blagnac Airport and drive southwest for 100 miles (160 kilometers) to travel here in about 2 hours. While you’re in this part of the world, check out the surrounding parks. Among the highlights are Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido, Parc Natural de Pocets-Maladeta and Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu.

From the religious structures and legends of Lourdes to the relaxation hubs around the hot springs, Hautes-Pyrénées offers varied vacation experiences.
