Follow the Elbe River upstream from Dresden to find this idyllic riverside hamlet, considered the birthplace of European porcelain.
With its Gothic castle perched high above the river, the Meissen historic town is one of the most picturesque in Saxony. Meissen is located just 16 miles (25 kilometers) from Dresden but it feels like you could be in a fairy tale. Famous for Meissen porcelain, the town continues to produce ceramics and attracts collectors and the curious from around the world. Visit the castle where the first example was made or take a tour of a porcelain factory to understand the process behind its construction.
Meissen is located with the Elbe Valley and is in the heart of Europe’s northernmost winemaking region. Spend a day visiting local wineries or sit back in one of the town’s many bars to sample the local produce. An annual wine festival is a great chance to experience the town’s festive sprit while trying a range of varieties from the valley.
