Simple. Rustic. Luxury.
Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia nestled in a grove of sugar maples between Back Creek and Little Mountain. Wake up to valley views which are likely to include deer grazing in the meadow, hummingbirds at the feeder, or a Bald eagle or great blue heron fishing along the creek. This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!
The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. You are invited to watch (and smell!) the process of turning 50 gallons of sugar water into a gallon of pure maple syrup - or you can help us if you would like!
There are a variety of hiking, hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, and access to both the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests is nearby.
The Cabin is located 16 miles from the quaint town of Monterey. Walking tours, galleries and shops, restaurants, beautiful mountain views, and friendly people make Highland County special all year round. Throughout the year, Monterey hosts numerous special events, the largest of which is the Highland County Maple Festival on the second and third weekends in March.
Located about 30 miles from Snowshoe Ski Resort, skiing, snowboard and tubing are available in season. Also nearby is the narrow-gauge railroad at Cass, West Virginia and the National Radio Observatory at Green Bank, WV.
Twenty miles south of the Cabin on Back Creek in neighboring Bath County are the towns of Warm Springs and Hot Springs, home to the historic Homestead resort and the Jefferson Pools mineral baths (currently being restored). These neighboring towns offer fine dining, golf, skiing/snowboarding, shopping, antiquing, chamber music at Garth Newel and a variety of art galleries.
The Cabin on Back Creek offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by a variety of recreational opportunities. The Cabin is located on a working farm. Please be aware that we do offer tours (and sales) at our sugar house which is sited adjacent to the Cabin. There may be some activities there during your stay. In the fall, we make apple butter, and in the spring we make maple syrup. Bottling our syrup is a (sporadic) year-round activity

Perfect location and super cozy cabin. Ideal for a weekend getaway from the city. Super clean and tidy, great amenities and very friendly hosts. Almost forgot the maple syrup, delicious so be sure to pick some up from their small shop near the cabin!
We enjoyed this little piece of heaven. This fulfilled all that we were looking for. All the area outside was so peaceful and relaxing. We would definitely go back.
We had a lovely time at the cabin! It was the perfect home base for lots of outdoor adventures in the area. The hot tub and woodburning stove were perfect to come back to. It was a very cozy weekend. We'd love to come back!
The cabin was in the perfect location to unwind. I enjoyed the solitude. I loved the way each room in the cabin had its on theme. Building a fire in the evenings made the cabin such a cozy place. I would love to visit again.
The cabin is perfect: tastefully furnished, well equipped, easily heatable.
The location is picture-perfect: nature at its most beautiful. - We stayed for more than three weeks. And loved it so much that we are thinking about coming back. It‘s a bit far from Switzerland, but worth it.
My mom, SIL, and I took a much needed three day weekend away to visit the Maple Festival and spend some girl time together. The Cabin at Back Creek is the perfect spot to do that. The proximity to the sites of the festival is perfect; we didn’t feel like we were in the car too long and the views along the drive are amazing. The Cabin is perfectly situated on the creek to enjoy the sounds of water and birds while relaxing on the porch or in the hot tub. Highly recommend a visit if you want to get away from the world for a bit.
Just what we needed and just what we expected. Nice little cabin on the stream, very cozy and relaxing. Friendly renters and the maple syrup is amazing make sure to bring extra money to spend in the store!! Been staying in highland my whole life over 40 years and this place really gives you a a taste of the community. We will be back.
The property was beautiful, our puppies loved being able run around and explore! The stars at night were amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub while star-gazing. Make sure to open the freezer from the right side of the door as the handle makes you think it just pulls out.
We'll plan to return sometime!
This was our 2nd stay at the Cabin at Back Creek. We absolutely love the cabin and location. Pat & Valerie are down to earth people who truly love to share their cabin and the maple making process with others. Valerie has the cabin stocked in the kitchen very well. Cooking meals there was easy. There are places to take a drive to, like up through Blue Grass or over to Green Bank or Cass, WV. But most of all hanging out at the cabin away from the crazy day to day life is the best. Sit out at night on the side deck and catch the awesome views of the stars (we even counted over 30 satellites on one night). We plan to stay here again in the future. Highland County had so much beauty to take in.
If your looking to get away from city hustle and bustle this is the place for you! But a heads up for city folk, a good bit of the drive is winding country roads without road lines.
Cabin is right next to the creek and there is a very nicely mowed walking path along the creek which made for wonderful easy morning walks. The fire pit and hot tub are fantastic!
Only negatives were minor.
The creek bank is a very steep drop so there's no safe way to get down to the water when the creek is running low(as it was during our stay).
As mentioned in the description, The sugar house is very visible from the front pourch of the cabin. It can not be seen from the back deck/hot tub which is nice. This wasn't an issue for us but if you're looking for 100% seclusion this may not be the place for you.
Lastly the back deck is in direct sun during the late morning and afternoon so gets quite warm and it is not well lit so we had to use a flashlight to grill after dark.
Again we found these things to be minor and did not deter us from leaving a 5 star review!
The cabin was comfortable and well appointed. The only complaint was the neighbors dogs barking almost non-stop most of the day Saturday but other than that, it was very relaxing and enjoyable. We will definitely book this location again.
The cabin was beautiful, clean and very cozy. We had a great time enjoying the view of the mountains the fresh air. The cabin had everything you needed outside and inside.
