Morteratsch Glacier Tours

Morteratsch Glacier featuring mountains, tranquil scenes and landscape views

Meet the glacier ghost and embark on a scavenger hunt in this spectacular ice formation that is, unfortunately, rapidly receding.

Morteratsch Glacier is a milky white ice behemoth with snowy slopes and picturesque trails. Various plaques along its trail show how it is gradually retreating due to the effects of global warming. Meander past the trees dotted alongside this serene and scenic ice formation.

Take a train to Morteratsch Train Station and walk for less than 1 hour to reach the glacier. Cross small streams and gaze up at the forests on the snowy, undulating hills.

Learn how the glacier is retreating as you read the informative signs that show where the ice formation once reached. Teach your kids about the consequences of global warming and consider the effect it has on the world’s natural resources. The glacier extended an additional 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) into the valley only 120 years ago.

Take a break at one of the 16 stopping points along the nature trail. Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic in this tranquil area. Guided tours and brochures are available at nearby hotels and the Pontresina Tourist Information Center to the north. This information includes scavenger hunts for kids and tales of the glacier ghost, Sabi.

Note that in spring, depending on snow conditions, a 6-mile (10-kilometer) ski run opens on the glacier for expert skiers. After your run, ride the train at the bottom of the glacier to relax with a meal at a restaurant near the base train station.
